to be fair, its only 12:41 here, but I've been on this damn call since 10:00 and there is no end in sight yet.

I did the same thing Monday night from 9pm to 4 am.

Last night was good, only 3 page outs

I guess I shouldnt bitch too much since it only happens once every 2 months or so, but it really throws my sleep schedule out of whack and I dont get to see my kids much for a week or so.

I work in the midrange software application support group for a telecommunications company supporting applications such as iplanet, apache, weblogic, websphere, etc.

Ouch, I'll probably have to be on call if I really want to pursue medicine as a career... :(

I bet not. I actually have it pretty good, I just wish I were sleeping. The good side of this is that if I am doing this for a few more hours, I'm going to just call in and work from home tomorrow.

I give the pager up at 10:30 Friday.. woo woo.

I think an EMT would really suck to be oncall or a Doctor.

Sorry to bring a dead thread back to life, however I must vent ....

ARRRRRGHHHHHH

I am supposed to be at work tomorrow at 8am (central time) ...

Most of the time, when we are on call (one 7 day week) every 12 weeks .. we get like 0 or 1 pages for the whole week.

Well, I have had this damn pager since Wednesday, and the damn thing has gone off 8 times .. I think I have a good 8 hours logged on VPN and in the support boxes I ssh into .....

I don't mind getting paged a few times in the week, but every single day multiple times sucks (especially the 3:18AM, 4:23AM, and the 5:04AM pages) ....

I think I'm going to need to show up a bit late tomorrow since I know I will probably continue to get paged, and I need to sleep ...

Also, I am not thinking about getting another job, 90% of the job I have, I like, this is part of the 10% that irks me ...

OK, I feel better now that I have gotten that out of my system.
BEING ON CALL IS SUCK!

I know the feeling, I worked from 6:30 friday morning to 7:45 friday afternoon (no breaks other than bathroom), came home and rescued my wife to take care of our 20mo. old who had a stomach virus of some kind. (she's been fine all day since she woke up this morning) I stayed up with her till around 5a.m. this morning (when she finally seemed to get over whatever it was she had in her system), then got paged at 7:00a.m and had to leave at 08:45a.m. and didn't get back until 3:30p.m. and now I've got insomnia. grrrrrrr, I had better not have to do anything else today (I can't believe it's already sunday here)

Die-Repairman covering a production department.

If it's broke I gotta fix it. Machine being down is a bad thing.

Community Assistant for a college apartment complex; most of the calls involve busting up parties. It sucks when you're standing there watching a stream of absolutely beautiful women walk by glaring at you because you busted their party. Even worse when there's a stream of parties. At least they're getting cited this year, maybe we won't have too many after this quarter.

I did it for three month after that they offer me the job with a 15% raise full time but I declined. The thing that really bothered me was when you get paiged call and get someone else or voicemail only to have they called again just as you fall back sleeping.

Couldn't you just suggest that they turn the volume down a little bit? Perhaps move into a more relaxed atmosphere like your apartment?:)

Does your salary suck ? Most people in IT-support get overpaid most of the time. It's when sh!t hits the fan that they actually earn the money they are making. I wouldn't complain unless you're making $25k.

And yes, I know how it sucks to be up at night stressing out.
