Being nice helps

I consider myself to be very polite in public establishments. Most of the time, people will return the gesture. I can't even tell you how many times in the past few months people haven't charged me what they should because I'm being polite: free beer, free food, free admission tickets, free movie tickets, etc. And I never ask for it. People just do it to be nice because I'm being nice.

Today was awesome. I went into a restaurant right as it was closing an hour earlier than usual. They said they were closed but big mouth me said "they told us you close at midnight". I felt bad, but by then he said "no problem".

I apologized a few times, starting talking to the waiter, made myself as maintenance-free as possible, and in the end, my entire bar bill was free, and he even topped me off. He went from Mr. "Damnit these people just walked in when we were closing" to Mr. "Wow, this guys really nice, I'm going to hook him up".

I didn't ask for it. Just feels good to be polite and people are nice in return.

The cook guys don't care about how nice you were. They fucked with your food anyway.

For the record, I always tip twice as much if free stuff came. But I never expect it.

surprised they cooked anything at all... once the cooks start cleaning the grill, that's usually it for the night no matter how nice some random customer might be.

they probably didn't...

they probably cleaned some crap out of the trash that was 'returned' earlier... and gave it to him... then they said "we'll comp him for it... so he think's he's getting a freebie meal"

no doubt. and they knew he'd be too nice to complain even if he didn't like it.

In a sad sign of the times, a few years ago, I was going into a restaurant and noticed an older woman about 30 feet behind me. I walked through the door and half way through it then I thought that I should hold the door open. So, I did waiting about 30 seconds for her to come in. She was very appreciative and made a comment about how rare acts like this are these days. 30 seconds out of my day is all it took. No fiscal reward but it actually made my day more than hers.
