Is it even possible?

I find that the better I get at a game the less fun I have playing it.

It's to the point now that I don't even want to play anything anymore because in the end something about the game just kills the fun for me after a while.

Anyone else notice a correlation between higher skill = lower fun?

Can't say I have any Idea what you're talking about, just finished a round of BFBC2 with my brother (my pilot) where I went 136-1 in the blackhawk. We had a lot of fun, probably too much fun. Everyone on the other team ? Not so much :)

The better I get at a game, the feeling of reward gets higher when I win or get a good score etc. It does get more intense though, but that feeling of intensity is a different flavor of fun.
Its not like the fun I had playing far cry 2, where you enjoy the graphics and have low intensity fun playing the game. Competitive online games get intense and emotionally charged when you get better and take them more serious.

Once you get really good when you have an off day and your play isn't quite up to your usual standard when you can start to feel frustrated. Especially when your in training for winning an international league game. But those are the days you should forget about trying to get better or dominate and instead just enjoy playing. Start only using pistols or a gun you really don't do well with so at least you improve in something you do less often.

You are a hacking bitch. Best I've done is 56-0 with a tank on Arica:(

It's sad, only 8-10 servers now with 32 players and I'm banned on a couple. Game is almost dead, there is so few servers the chance of coming across hacker is about 25%.

OP, you are talking about single player or multiplayer?

Sometimes in online games where I've developed a rep for skill, I feel pressure with games that publicly broadcast your stats to keep my stats up, but I've either stopped caring or developed ways to ease that pressure. I played with a loss account in Starcraft1 to avoid pressure issues, though that also meant I could never play 1v1 games. On Steam, I rapidly change my name often to nonsensical and unmemorable stuff, so only determined people can keep track of me.

In fact, I've mostly stopped playing multiplayer altogether. There are tons of hackers in multiplayer games, even ones where it makes little sense to cheat since there aren't really stats, like L4D2. I've caught so many in action (recording blatantly obvious aim-botting, map hacking, etc. from their point of view) that I actually prefer playing offline games now. It's just not fun to play with hackers, even if they suck and you can use skill to overpower them. It's just not fun playing with hackers.

It seems the only people who like playing Starcraft 2 any more are the hardcore junkies who were willing to invest 8 hours a day during the beta. Everyone else got bored and moved on. So I'd say in almost anything multiplayer, your enjoyment goes up the better you get.

As for single player:
No one will admit it, but Fallout 3 and Skyrim are their most fun when you have no idea how anything works and shit has to be learned from scratch.

I find myself taking the game more seriously as I get better and my tolerance for mistakes starts dropping off dramatically.

I don't really know what to make of it, the only reason I keep playing multi player games the length I do is because of the competitive nature of them, if it doesn't make for a good competitive game then I'll get bored of it pretty fast.

I haven't found it at all to be the case. The better I am at a game the more fun I have with it.

depends on the game. league of legends is a love/hate relationship. great with buddies, terrible with trolls. i also really enjoy SP games since there's no rush..you can just take it at your own pace.

on the other hand, when i was playing volleyball with friends, i got to the point where i care more about the competition, playing well, and winning. it stopped being fun, so i stopped going.

I was number 200 out of 70,000 players in TF2 and after a certain point of ALWAYS winning it just stopped being fun. So I switched over to CS:S where I am a noob and am lucky to get 3 kills a round.

Are you talking about TF2 HLStatX or something? I didn't even pay attention to that until one day someone asked me if I was the real [my username]. I was like, uh, as far as I know, yes. Turns out I was placing in the top-10 a lot. I lmao, I am definitely not top-10 globally in terms of skill level regardless of whatever HLStatX claims. I started changing my username a lot after that to try to avoid attention even though you could still track me by Steam ID.

If I had choose between mastering a game or getting my ass kicked every time I play I'm definitely going with the former.

Eve got that way with me. But that was more a factor of being burned out of keeping everyone in the alliance happy, and dealing with the people who were always complaining.

I made this post while raging about how broken AA missiles are in BF3 at this moment. I'm a really good BF3 player and it's slowly becoming not fun to me anymore.

Then I checked all my games and found nothing else I had any desire to play. Maybe I jsut getting old and jaded.

I have the same problem with almost every FPS. Eventually I become too worried about keeping my k/d and w/l from dropping to actually play the way I want to play. That's when you bust out the single player games.

It goes in cycles really. Single player games for a while and then I dive back into the FPS's online.

To me, enjoying a game means I can actually do something. If I am unable to do anything worthwhile, I lose that part of enjoyment. Dying instantly, not having a victory every so often, or being meaningless, those things apply not to just video games, or even board games but everything.

Probably the reason why I stay out of really competitive games above my level or any "hardcore" games.

BF3 is what stopped being fun for me, but I think it's 100% due to the fact that in every server I join I'm the one competent person out of 64 players on my team against 46 decent players.

I enjoy metro/CQC maps because my team means nothing and I can dominate.

I agree.

I feel that way with any game. The less I know the more fun it is. Once I learn most of it, the fun has to change to me just enjoying the game and/or enjoying being "good" at it. Otherwise I am done playing it.

Overall though, I can have fun with a game being very good at it. I have done so with WoW quite often. Glad season 1 and season 6. Top guild kills for BC and Wrath, and such. I found that if you just focused on 1 part of a game, it can get dull quickly. I found most fun, (such as MMOs) is to enjoy each aspect. Achievements. PvP. PvE. Simulation. W/e the game is, I try to enjoy each aspect of it.

Winning can be fun, but trying to win is often not fun.

When I play a game for fun, I enjoy it, when I play a game to win at all costs, it starts to lose some of that fun.

I agree with you to an extent, but I find that even after I "get good" at a game, I can still enjoy it if I just let go of my desire to play at 100% all the time and instead just focus on fun.

It's not to say that when I play for fun I actively try to lose or anything. I just mean that my priorities are shifted towards trying "fun stuff" instead of the tried and true best strategies for whatever game it may be. Sometimes playing for fun like this improves my playing to win games, because I find that learn a lot more about a game when you don't play it the same way every time.

I agree.

By agreeing to him you admit it. By admitting it, you disagree with him. Your post has created paradox and we will soon all be dead as the universe collapses in on itself.

But yeah, I agree with the statement, but I don't agree that no one will admit it.
