I made this thread yesterday detailing some problems I was having with a company trying to bill me for fraudulent charges. No one seemed too interested, but whatever, I need some serious advice, so here goes another thread. Cliff notes for those who didn't or don't want to read the other thread:
- debit card number was stolen in early May
- canceled my card on May 23rd and filed a fraud claim along with an affidavit from my bank
- some guy used my card number for a phone sex hotline on 6/24, after my card had been canceled for almost 2 weeks
- the company in charge of the billing for the phone sex hotline sent me a bill for $156.02
- called the company, explained my situation, they want me to fill out paperwork and file a police report
That's pretty much the long and the short of it.
Basically, what I want to know now is what my options are. I really want to do this their way and just get it taken care of, but they're business practices are pretty shady and they're not guaranteeing that this will go away. A couple of other posters in my other thread claimed that I could just ignore them, but I don't know how that would work out. I don't want this thing coming and biting me in the ass later on. Here's what I want to know:
1) Do you think I could safely ignore these guys?
2) Is there any legal action the company could take against me assuming I refuse to pay up?
3) Will not paying result in a dent in my credit, or will it hurt me otherwise?
