Being a unionized public servant fatcat is pretty tough

I just canceled my disability and sickness insurance because I can't afford the $85/month, not when my monthly take home pay is $1960.

How do I get the awesome public worker benefits and fatcat salaries I hear so much about?

You improve and work on your career and advance. Also you can get good insurance on your own if you want it. I think I pay less than 30 bucks a month for killer ST/LT disability insurance (80% ST, 80% of salary long term)

I have a great business idea that I'm pretty sure will be a huge success but I don't see how I can possibly get a loan with my credit.

Straighten out your credit or shop the idea as a proper business plan to investors.

Become a lifeguard in California.
"According to a city report on lifeguard pay for the calendar year 2010, of the 14 full-time lifeguards, 13 collected more than $120,000 in total compensation; one lifeguard collected $98,160.65. More than half the lifeguards collected more than $150,000 for 2010 with the two highest-paid collecting $211,451 and $203,481 in total compensation, respectively."

While I'm a public servant I really want to be a greedy fatcat. So how do I do it?

In a few weeks my health insurance contribution goes up to $154/month. Where is the damn fatcattery?

Those fat cats have been sipping at the public trough for 15-20 years.

How long have you been sucking at the public's teat?

Google "Bootstrapped, Profitable, and Proud" it's a series on successful startups that refused to sell out to VC's or rely on other types of financing.

That's because you're covered under your wives Health Insurance she has working for the Government

Meanwhile, the private sector laid off 15% of its workforce.

If the private sector laid off 15% of its workforce, how did unemployment go from 5% to 10%? Is the private sector only 1/3 of the economy?

The Hawaii unemployment rate is 5.1% btw. Maui County's median income is $60k.

Cry more.

Or take every civil service test available (police, firefighter, corrections, etc etc) Remember you can always say no if called. Worked out for me (i took a test in '02 while still in army, and got hired to current job in '08) now i sit pretty and i couldn't give a flying fuck about what anyone else thinks. My family will be provided for. Ymmv.

Bite the bullet and decide to leave Maui and work in some hicktown where the cost of living is low, and the pay is reasonable.

We all make choices and you have made yours.
