Being a competitive person in a non-competitive environment

We went to a work party for her coworkers and spouses and they had a card game tournament for money. It wasn't much, just a $5 buy in but that was enough to set off my competitive side.

Since I'm in Michigan it was a euchre tournament where you can frequently tell your partner to pick up a card which makes that suit trump.

The partners were always random but most of the people weren't remotely serious about the game. When one person had the opportunity to tell her partner to pick up the card she just looked at her hand for a while and said things like "hmm maybe...." before passing. Of course since her partner was not a moron he picked it up and they won the hand. Another person asked a bystander if he should call it. "I have these two cards (would be trump) and this ace". By standard said to pass but, shockingly, their partner picked up the card and they won.

A few misdeeds as well. Delt too many cards? Well just choose one to discard! Lots of little things like that.

It wasn't terrible but I had a hard time enjoying myself during the tournament

I take games I care about seriously, but those games aren't cards. I'd have probably been more like your aquaintances in that situation. Make the game chess or ut2k4, and I play to win. Unless I'm very much better than my opponent... I've thrown games to keep it interesting for others. If you're dominating play, you're playing with the wrong people. Games are more fun when they can go either way.

On the subject of competition. Every time I kick ass in an online multiplayer game some one has to cheat. I can't tell you how many times some ass hat used his cheat to initiate a game mismatch when he knew he lost in Command & Conquer Zero Hour. Or some asshole pulls out his aim bot in a FPS. Probably all piss ass teenagers. There should be a minimum age to play with prof of birth date somehow. Some of the most shallowest dick heads hang out in multiplayer games. I especially hate the ones who friendly kill. Or as they call it, team killing.

You need to play on a server that has active administration. Botting should be met with a permaban, and unsportmanslike behavior should be met with a escalating system of match kick-temp vacation-permaban

It seems far and few between to find a good server with real Mods that actively kick the little shits. My last FPS I played though was COD Modern Warfare. Recently I've been playing the old classic BF2 and BF2 with the AIX mod for single player. I did run an AIX server, but few joined and then the ass hat server host was shoty. I even reported them to the Better Biz Bureau. Gameservers is their name frag no lag is their game? LMAO!

Interesting. I'm the total opposite - I don't care if I win or lose at any given competition.

I know what the OP is talking about.

Every summer, I suggest a Hunger Games, fight-to-the-death sort of thing for the interns before they go back to school. No one at work is into it.

Sad. :(

I play to win and win to play! If I lose I go ape shit! I mean pull out the 1911 and start caping. HAHAHA J/K
I'm sitting here trying to think about things that I get competitive about. I mean, I work hard and do well in school and at work, but those aren't really competitions. Things where there is one winner? I can't really think of an instance where I care. It's especially true in video games - I'm genuinely horrible at a lot of them and the rage that some people get is just hilarious to me. I remember back when I played League of Legends with friends. We'd get a few pick up players in our five person groups and I'd draw some... ire. :p

I'm literally just pleased to wake up in the mornings (maybe not always on work days, but you know). Everything else is icing.
