Behold, for we bought bulk beef.

In his infinite wisdom, Linuxboy decided to buy bulk beef a month ago. Of course, he didn't go to Safeway or to Costco or to Cash n Carry. Oh no. He found a meat processing facility south of Tacoma that was selling beef for $1/lb. He then proceeded to arrange, for our purchase, 400 lbs of beef.

On one frozen Saturday morning, he and I traveled to the frozen wastelands of Thurston County, whereupon we picked up the beef, conveniently packaged in the form of half a steer. By means of a complicated mechanism, he and I transported it back to our house for processing.

Processing ended up being a complicated process (duh), ultimately taking over two full days and requiring assistance from other ATOT members (mostly Hotchic). Also, as a result of my innate skills I required medical attention by the end of the day. Hey, I got him better than he got me.

Zenmervolt refused to take photos (something about not wanting to catch pneumonia or get raw beef juice on his expensive camera) so, if you haven't noticed, all my photos were from my camera phone.

After processing and packaging, we ended up with 265 lbs of beef at a 58% discount off retail. It was a lot of work, but it will last us a while. I'm looking forward to doing it again, hopefully this time without the disfiguring accidents with a butcher's knife.

That's pretty awesome. Was that an entire side, or was it a quarter?

Did you break it down into subprimals and hang to dry age, or did you pack it all up? It looks like a ton of work 🙂

Should have just drove around. I see lots of the cows just standing out in open fields. Not much hunting involved, you can usually get right up next to them.

You see one butcher shop, you've seen 'em all. Besides, I ain't getting up at 5:00am to pick up beef or spending all day in an 18 degree garage when it's warm inside and there are plenty of books to be read. 😛

Exactly. Cattle prodder + flatbed/pickup truck = win

Eh, we could have used your camera and someone with the skill to operate it. Plus, by the time we got to packaging everything up I was too tired to take photos.

beef from an unknown source and processed at a non-USDA inspected garage? awesome!

It's going to taste sooooooo much better. Ummmm, make sure you cook it well.

Where did the extra 135 lb of beef go? You kept the fat for ground beef and the bones to bait mountain lions, right?

Linuxboy has indicated that he is interested in purchasing a live cow next time. I am skeptical but open to persuasion.
