Hi,

I am trying to setup my first RAID array. My goal is to have a full-backup of all my drives. Currently i have

Motherboard: ASUS p5W-dh delux (comes with)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131025

- SATA RAID: RAID 0/1/5/10 Matrix RAID
- Additional RAID Controller: Jmicron JMB363, Silicon Image 4723
- 2 x Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s support hardware RAID 0 or RAID 1 mode

HDD:
- ATA 150 (Raptor WD 150 GB)
- Segate Barracuda 320 GB 7200.10

For this i am going to buy the following to have as a mirror (can a 10,000 rpm drive mirror on a 7200 via a RAID?):

- WD 7200 160 GB
- Segate Barracuda 320 GB 7200.10

My question is with the given RAID controller on the board, do i need an additional controller card? If so can you please suggest one that will complish the above.

Thanks a ton for your help.

Are you trying to mirror both drives? What's the purpose of your backups (i.e. data security/recovery or fault tolerance)? If you're just backing up important data, then RAID1 is overkill. All you really need is one or two large drives that are connected externally. You can do backups to the external drives.

Well in case of failure i do want the ability to just switch to my backup drives and later replace the faulty ones.

Therefore i want to keep regular copies of my current drives ...

though i would appreciate if you can share other cheaper backup solutions ...

P.S. Will this work if my drives are not identical?
