BEFSR41 linksys vs. SMC7004BR SMC barricade:

Yes, you read that right. This <$200 router includes a four port 10/100 full-duplex switch! A first for this class of router! So those speed freaks out there can pop this guy into their network and not worry about Mom's web surfing slowing down their Quake death-matches.

i read the above from a website regarding the linksys. i am wondering if the SMC has switching ability as well?

I've been happy with my Barricade. And you just don't know how much you'd miss the print server until you've had one... gives you a lot more flexability as to where you locate your printer, especially in an office situation. Not to mention not losing the printer to the rest of the lan just because you hafta reboot the pc.

i've read some stuff about the barricade being "slower" performance than the Linksys, and the netgear being tops among the three. Sounds concerning.

I've had all three routers. I currently have the Netgear RT314 and it has been great so far. If it had a nice setup interface like the Linksys or SMC, then it would win hands down! The reason that I sent the SMC router back is that it was slower than the Linksys or Netgear. In fact, for some reason, it was much slower on web pages. Downloads seemed OK, but web pages, especially flash or audio/video integrated, would be much...MUCH...slower...🙁 I played with the router for a few days and couldn't get the speed issue solved. I sent it back, swapped it for the Netgear and now am pleased. Netgear = hard to set up, but very fast and rock stable.

Good Luck!

I have the SMC Barricade, and love it. The print server feature is really nice, and if my DSL ever went down the com port would come in handy too. I did not experience any slow downs, or heard of others having slow downs until now. Of course, I am only 500' feet from the CO, which helps a lot.

ABC: Where did you read about the SMC being slower?

HI Engineer, thanks for the lowdown.

Hey Bronko, I really cannot remember exact websites but I really have come across them the last month or so, and certainly mixed in with that, some message boards with user experiences. If I backtrack and find where, I will post here for you.

Well I'd like to decide what to buy before this buy.com free shipping is over (tonight).

So you're 500' from the CO? I am 160'...

I have two pcs connected to a barricade, and I must say that I am less than impressed with this product.

The reason?

It's slower than software NAT setup I used to have!!! Now, there may be some problems with my setup (very unlikely) and I am trying to reach SMC tech support to find out. Another thing to consider: SMC says they have 24/7 tech support, but nobody's answering my calls at this time. Why say 24/7 when it's not?

I guess I am not being too fair since it works great when it works, but for some reason every now and then, the network seems to stall or get very slow (every 10 to 15 minutes and lasts for several minutes). I'm guessing it's barricade's problem because it started happening right after I started using it.

Another problem I have been experiencing with this router is that sometimes one pc can access the internet just fine, but the other pc has problems (slow or no connection) accessing the internet.

I have upgraded to the latest firmware upgrade hoping it would fix the problems I have been experiencing, but no luck so far.

Any suggestions or comments? Should I return this one for a Linksys or Netgear?

sirsoho,

Like I posted above, I too had the slowness associated with the SMC router. I've also endured the nagging little problems with the Linksys router. The Netgear router has been rock solid for 2 weeks now (no lockups, resets, etc) and I have seen transfer speeds of up to 4.1 Mbps with it on the net. The setup is a pain, but the product is rock solid IMO...

Good Luck

😀

Odd, I dont have any slowdown problems with my Barricade. And the print server really comes in handy. I just got mine from egghead.com for 120 bucks. At that price, it was worth it easily.

I just got this SMC Router as well and Am having slowdown problems with the second computer. Also for some stupid reason the second computer cant see the printer.
Here is my setup:

First Computer:
P3 550E
256Mb Dimm PC133
3Com Card w/ processor
Win2K

Second Computer:
AMD 300Mhz
64Mb PC100
Linksys Card 10/100
Win98SE

I know that the second system is slow but for web surfing its shouldn't be that slow.
Could someone help? I'm thinking about returning it as well. But b4 i do maybe there is
something i can fix? Thanks in advance.

SCSI, you did intall the print server software on the 2nd pc right? I know that's obvious, but I caught myself forgetting that when I added a new pc to my lan the other day.

TheBigZ,

Thanks Man!!! hehehe STUPID ME!! well i found another problem with this DAMN router. Here it goes--> second port from left to right on the router is f@#$in slow!!!! Its like my OLD Old oLd OOLLD 56K modem or even worst. to solve this problem i had to switch over to the thrid port and then it works fine. Anyone got this problem?

Did i do something wrong? 😛 🙁

Has anyone gotten the barricade work with PC-to-Phone? The default for Special AP does NOT work, and the tech support guy is CLUELESS! Not to mention that the documentation is fairly imcomplete.

Any help is appreciated. If I cannot get this to work, it will go back to buy.com as a defective unit - will get a Netgear instead. Thanks! BTW, does anyone know how good buy.com is with returns? I just noticed that my SMC box does not have any UPC on it. Will that be a problem?
