Everyone I know is drinking Miller Lite these days. People tell me it has lower calorie per alcohol content ratio than most beers, I've never looked it up though.

I think the best ratio (for mass availability) is probably MGD 64, though I haven't researched it.

If you are concerned about calories you shouldn't be drinking alchol PERIOD. It's secondly only in calories to fat per gram. You don't get high alcohol and low calories. It doesn't work that way.

What really amazes me is that Michelob, for example, is down 72% in 4 years.

It's hard to imagine ANY product losing that much in sales unless there was some horrible health-related recall or contamination or something, and people just never went back. It's an incredible number.

The alcohol industry is a moody, trendy one. It's almost like the fashion industry. Things get marketed to oblivion and maybe (or maybe not) catch on and then they run for a bit. Then the next thing comes in. Michelob had a huge push for a few years with the "Ultra" line. Then something else came out (Select 55 or MGD 64 or whatever) and those caught on. The marketing for Ultra has really died down. Plus it wouldnt' surprise me that InBev is actually trying to slowly kill off the Michelob brand to cull the heard a bit.

Now that vi edit is talking about greasy burgers and fries with beer, I know what I am getting for dinner. And I'm in the middle of eating a huge Subway sandwich 😀

This isn't recent, but somewhat on topic: Schlitz used to be the #1 beer in the US until they changed their formula and then Bud took over.

But recently (2008) they switched back to their "original formula"

Has anyone tried it since the change?

No

My Father used to import Shiltz to Germany after WW2 and as distributer he had some shirts that I got that have the word Shlitzerland and little mountains and skiers printed all over them.

From what you've got on tap, I imagine you're in the Philly area. Philly isn't quite as hipster as a lot of other cities. Trust me....its a good thing.

Anyway, while I generally do drink better beer now that I can afford it, and I agree with the earlier poster that the "full" versions of those beers are pretty terrible, I wouldn't get too uppity, beer snobs. Down economy aside, these companies have been "branching" out. Bud Select was a trendy thing for awhile, but now Bud Light Lime and Bud Golden Wheat are their big push, with their upcoming "local" beer plan coming soon as well. You'll also note that that list doesn't include Miller Lite, Bud Light, or Coors Light...and those are the ones that get all the advertising.

Except that the major brewers have seen falling revenue for a while, whereas the craft brewers are growing rapidly. Shitty domestic piss will one day be remembered as a few-decades long dark ages.

Doubtful. See this link to understand why.

http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/154600/the-same-mistake

A) Big companies can make beer for cheaper
B) Some people just can't afford more expensive beer, like it or not
C) Even if they can, a lot of people don't care enough to spend the extra money
D) Big companies can afford more advertising, and like it or not, marketing is king

I'll drink any and all of it. I'm not picky 😉

Although if I'm having a beer with dinner, these aren't my first choice.

Combination of the economy going down the shitter and the emergence of micro breweries.

And the snobbery that comes with drinking micro.

I see that Bluemoon is doing damn well. I start to see them on TV now.

[edit]

WTF Bluemoon is owned AND created by Coors? Mind fucking blown.
