Just get jack and coke or a screwdriver. Long Island Tea is good too. Don't worry about it you will be fine. I don't drink anymore so I can't help much more than that.

While I have had alcohol plenty of times before, I've never ordered it from a bar. (Usually it was my parent's alcohol, lol)
Well, what did you have that you liked at home?

:)
Got another question ... are there any questions I might be asked with certain drinks?

Vodka & Tonic - should be no questions
Screwdriver - "
Gin & Tonic - "
Rum & Coke - "

I'd stay away from LI Ice Tea, Fuzzy Nails, Sex in the Attic, and so on until you know what you actually want.

(This was much easier for me than the "IQ" thread) :p

At home sometimes I have a shot of baily's irish cream with my mother, wine... rarely a beer, but I'm really not a huge fan of it.

Some places will either have large or small - a small glass of beer (draft) which comes out of a "tap" or a large glass (draft) - I'd suggest the large glass...

Sooooo

For the more involved drinks (eg. Long Island Iced Tea), I can assume you can get this or most other mxied drinks specifically because they are "mixed drinks" so any bartender can make them, yes?

In otherwords I don't run the risk of this, do I? ...

me: "Long Island Iced Tea PLEASE"
bartender: "Sorry, can't do it"

A bartender that can't do a LIST should be slapped in the face...

I believe you'll be able to get the drinks that everyone has offered...

It is assumed that bartenders know drinks...that's their job

If they don't know, they look like an ass.

Just ask them to mix it like Tom Cruise ;)

Woohoo a way I can make the bartender look stupid instead of the other way around.

Anyway, ok, I will try a variety of the things you guys have suggested. (Not too much though, I don't have a high tolerance and I don't want to be drunk. :))

Rum or Jack and Coke is a standard drink.

As far as beer goes, if you don't know what to order, get a Corona. It is a good, lite beer that no one can rag on you about. Of course this will be a bottled beer. Now, if they have it, I would always get Guinness on tap (draft), but thats just me. Mmmmm... I think I'll go open one right now...

Ok let me try again.

Beer

In bars, it comes in these forms.

1) On Tap (from a tap hooked up to a keg)
2) In a Bottle (self explanitory)
3) Can (stay far FAR away)

Mixed Drinks

All bartenders worth their salt will know how to make you a proper drink with just the name. There really should be no other questions. If he or she does ask you something, just tell him you've never had it before, the are not going to have a go with you or bust your balls about it. The best thing to do is just to go with a friend of yours and have what they have, that is if you don't know what kind of alcohol you like. I know I prefer vodka to anything else. Having what a friend does let's you try different alcohols to see how you like them.

Terms

Most of these should be self-explanitory.

1) Shaken
2 Stiired
3) On the rocks (on ice)
4) Straight up (no ice)

I hope that straightened things out for you a bit. Other questions you can PM me or something. Just go have fun, don't worry so much about what the bartender is going to think of you. They are just there to get paid in the end.

You know, it's too bad these have the stigma of "chick" drinks. When you get to the point where you aren't trying to impress your friends and can go out for cocktails with friends after work (or at lunch), you find out that these are pretty tasty.

Otherwise, I just get a vodka tonic.

Thanks. As for the beer, I understand the forms in which it comes>> I was merely referring to the words you use to order a beer in a can, in a bottle, or on tap.

If you only knew me. It takes at least five or six attempts to convince me to do something like clubbing. A few years ago I wouldn't so much as play sports. My whole life was EverQuest (long story) and Starcraft (for when EverQuest servers were down)

Now I go out with girls, go clubbing, have started playing some sports... life is much better.

BUT the old me still lingers, and the old me is VERY self conscious... I can't help it.

So a miller lite draft gets me a bottle of miller lite? (just to be clear;-)

No. If you order a draft miller lite, you will get a miller lite in a glass poured from the tap.

I always tip the bartender. So now the bars that I frequent, every other drink is free usually.

Okay, despite what most are telling you, a Long Island is no stronger than a rum and coke, or any other highball for that matter. There's the same amount of alcohol in all of them with the exception of ones that contain liquor that's only 20% or so (amaretto is an example). People think that long islands are very strong because they contain 4 or 5 different kinds of booze, but the reality is it's about 1/4 oz of each when the bartender makes it (they usually have that stuff pre mixed and they use the hose dealy). Try a few things though. I usually pound 4 double long islands right when I get there to get started, then I'll slow down a little with some rye and cokes, and then when I'm drunk, I'll sip on a few gin and tonics.

Amaretto and cokes are very easy to drink, and aren't that strong.

You may want to try your luck with some shots too, if the night isn't going the way you want it to go. Tequila is probably the most popular straight up shot, and most people have a little thing with it. If you order one, they'll give you a slice of lemon and a salt shaker. What you do is lick the back of your hand, pour on some salt so that it sticks, quickly lick it off, down the shot, and start sucking on the lemon. They'll think you're a pro :)

If you're buying shots for girls, bazooka joes and china whites are creamy chick shots, while broken down golf carts are a little tangier, yet still easy.

If you want to show off a little, order a dr pepper (no, they won't give you the soda). The drink is 1/4 glass of beer mixed with 1/4 glass of coke, and a shot of amaretto. Drop the shot glass into the glass of beercoke (hehe), and then pound it back (it's easy).

If you have an asshole friend who you want to punish (great for birthdays hehe), order a prairie fire. It's a shot of 1/2 oz tequila, and 1/2 oz tabasco sauce. Nasty things them.

There are a couple of really showy drinks that you can do too, but they involve fire, and most clubs don't like that stuff. If you're interested in trying them out at parties and stuff, I can give you a few of those too.

Oh oh oh, and the shot specials are cheap for a reason: they're watered down to sh!t. Ask the bartender to make it new for you (the specials are ALWAYS pre mixed and they just pour it from a bottle), and then tip him/her really well (you are getting the drink for cheap). They'll usually take care of you pretty good after that.

A bartender that makes a long island with only 1/4 oz of each liquor is a schizer. They are ripping you off. You pay $8 for a drink that only has 4 total shots in it? Now that is Blasphemy.

I never pay $8 for a long island. They're just a little more expensive than plain highballs, yet they still have only the requisite 1 1/2 oz of booze in them. (the 4 x 1/4 is just a rough guideline, as every place makes it different, and may have 5 liquors, or give more of one etc). But, again, most times that stuff is pre mixed, and they pump it into the glass with the hose (the same one they have for coke too). I think the standard on those hoses is 1 button for coke, 1 for ginger, one for soda, one for rum, and one for long island mix. Rye, gin, etc etc are all in the bottles and they actually pour it into a shot glass and then into your glass.
