Beer: Is light beer lighter in taste or lighter in alcohol level?

Both, since alcohol contributes to taste.

Also lighter in calories although not worthfully so. IE: regular beer at 6 % with 150 calories and a light beer with 4% will have 100 calories. My point is that light beer is sucky and you should never have a reason to drink it.

Wow, is that Gennesey Cream Ale? We can only get that in Penn. and NY...we used to be able to get it in MD, but they stopped selling it...

I drank a 24 ouncer of CAMO beer tonight and it made me its master. CAMO is a local beer I think, they come in camoflauge cans, it's 8% malt liquer and it is nasty stuff. Ghetto Brew.

Light beer is lighter in taste and calories. It's made wit a bit more rice and corn and then blended with water before bottling. (Malted barley and wheat give beer the "body"). In the US, most beers are around 3.5-4.3% ABV. Don't let ANYONE tell you that Bud or any other of the big breweries (made and distrubuted in the US ) is 6-7% alcohol.

(Skoorb, I understand that alcohol in beer in Canada is higher. Just wanted to say that before you decided to get in a wizzing contest. Canadians at least have a bit of a concept on what a real ale and lager are!)

all alchohol here in Utah is 3.5% max. There are no liquor stores here either, except the state run ones (which have more alchohol in them). I got busted for under age drinking tonight off of 4 light beers (had 0.041 BAC). Have to go to court now and everything, with just a freaking .041 BAC. I'm so pissed, don't know what to do.

aceman - are you saying that bass is not ale? how bout harp? whats shiner, then? you don't like red hook? brewing is coming back to america, times are good. (EDIT: note, first two beers mentioned are not american)

asabour - move.

ahh, Utah. LOL, those mormons aren't gonna know what hit em what the hard partying europeans crash into town for the olympics. Still, underage drinking is underage drinking, you got what you deserved no matter how little you drank.

Better question.... should I drink the Beast..light... or bud ice.... I am drinking the beast now, but I had like 5 bud lights before....

<< all alchohol here in Utah is 3.5% max. >>

oh man, that is pitiful.

i won't drink beer less than 5.5% unless there is no choice! but 3.5%?!?!?!?! i didn't think american beer was that wimpy. who would want to have to down like 8 beers to get a minor buzz!

and let me guess....your rum is only 20% or something? lol 😀

OK, instead of guessing, I looked it up (what a concept, huh?)

Light beer is only slightly lower in alcohol content.

Here is a breakdown of alcohol content by beer for Michigan. Your state may be different (I know Oregon allows a higher alcohol content for beer then most other states).

Alcohol Content of Beer

Some Examples using alcohol by volume:

Budweiser ----------------- 4.66
Budweiser Light ----------- 3.43

Lone Star --------------------4.58
Lone Star Light -------------3.49

Michelob ---------------------4.95
Michelob Light ---------------4.15

Miller---------------------------4.64
Miller Light--------------------4.19

Coors---------------------------4.51
Coors Light--------------------4.00

Here in Colorado all those beers above that you can buy at the grocery stores DO NOT have more than 3.2%.
Beer with more than 3.2% must be bought at the liquor stores. <- not open on Sundays!
I must say that I was really surprised when I came to this "free country" as foreign student two years ago,
and saw that other countries are much more liberal. Where I come from you can drink beer when you are 16
and hard liquor when you are 18. Best of all the beer tastes good.
