Beep sound with new IE window?

So I am home for the holidays and brought my computer with me to do some work while I am home, however I didn't bring the speakers so I had to find the speaker wire for my monitor, today hooked that up and noticed that when I open a new IE window I am getting a beep type sound, its kinda the error "clunk" or whatever sound ya get when an error window pops up... yet no window, pages load fine, just want the sound to go away. I have scanned with the latest updates of Norton, SpyBot, Adaware, Hijackthis, and cwshredder, nothing that points to a cause.

I have google toolbar installed but pop up sounds are turned off.

Any ideas on what the heck is causing this? or how to stop it?

Have you tried going under Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Sounds, and setting the Complete Navigation sound to None?

Just checked and it is set to nothing.

The sound is the default error sound if that helps at all and it doesn't happen everytime, it seems to happen about 50% of the time, no particular site because it will do it on the same site it hasn't done it on and vice versa.

Maybe it's the SP2 popup blocker? I think that makes a sound when it blocks popups. Also when it blocks Active-X installers and things, I think it makes a sound as well.

That was my thought also, but the little icon in the lower right of the IE window is shown when it blocks a pop up so you can select whether or not to allow it.... its not there. Plus the fact that it happens on sites I know for a fact dont have pop ups would partially rule that out.

Anyone? I have been searching online and still can't find a cause for it, guess I will just have to tolerate it if no one has ideas...

Could it have anything to do with the Zones? A few days ago Spybot found a DSO exploit, i removed it and fixed the registery, it was found in the Internet Settings > Zones portion of the reg if that helps at all.

you can always just delete that "clunk" sound out of the media folder and see if it still does it. I hate that sound altogether.

eh... thats kinda the bandaid fix... id rather leave it there for future errors, IE isnt the only app to use that file.

Do you have flash and/or shockwave installed? I get a sound like that on my computer at home when I browse Anandtech forums, because they use flash ads and I don't have flash player installed.

I have the same problem. I think it has to do with Norton Password Manager. When it's running, every time I right click on a link to "Open in New Window," I hear the annoying beep sound. I don't want to just change the beep setting to none, because if there is an occasion where I need to hear that beep, I want to hear it (as in testing the volume level in the system tray, it's the same beep). If I close Norton Password Manager it doesn't beep anymore. I would like to still use NPM without the beep sound. If anyone knows how to get rid of this beep while still using NPM, I would greatly appreciate the knowledge.
