My dad wants to buy this machine. He primarily surfs youtube and may start playing some fps games again. My only concern is the 64-bit. I have never had any experience with 64-bit anything....do you have to buy 64-bit specific software and hardware? Should his current printer (few years old but still nice) work with it?

Thanks guys...I'll have to get back in the hardware loop again sometime.

yes.64 bit OS allows usage of more RAM

32 only accepts up to 3 GB RAM

do you want us to come up with a build?

Thanks, I may need to come up with a build unless he is set on this machine.

So everything has to be 64 bit (software and hardware) to work on it or does 32-bit software and hardware work?

I'd be as concerned with Windows 7 compatibility as with 64-bit compatibility. I have a 6-year-old printer (but it was free!) that doesn't work with a new Win7 machine I just got. Had to install a Win2K VM just to get it working again. (But your father wouldn't want to fiddle with such a thing.)

Just look for Windows 7 64-bit drivers for your printer. They either exist or they don't. :\

Edit: Most 32-bit software should be fine.

32-bit software will work just fine. There is no fundamental incompatibility with most hardware, its just a matter of whether or not the hardware manufacturer bothered to make 64-bit drivers. So yeah, check the printer manufacturer's web site and see if 64-bit drivers exist.

If a "few years" means 3 years, you should be fine. If it's more like 10, you may have a problem. 😉

Thanks for the help. I'll brush up one of these days if I can ever find my way out of OT.
