I see your price (lets say.. 330) I will probably ask for what I'd consider a really good price (200). I'll say "I'm interested and willing to pay 200 give or take, interested? let me know. etcetc."
I expect you to counter with something. Probably significantly higher.. say... 280. Great, I got you in the 200's.
I then probably say the most I'm willing to pay at the time, say 250. (I'm not looking to have 50 e-mails exchanged with you).
IF I get it for that, great! You the seller sell it and I get an item for cheaper than what I expected.
If not, then I move on. I'll thank you for your time, and keep 250 on the side in case you email me two weeks later saying "hey, still interested in X item at 250?"
Hey will you sell for 290 instead of 330? what about 270? 250... 240...

1) its not at a store. everything is open to offers. lowballing is part of that. you don't like it don't try to sale.
2) no matter if you offer it as NIB no way would i buy it for 10% below new. to many people are scamming and will re-wrape used crap. also many will lower the price more if you ask.
3) it does not hurt to ask.
4) yeah those are assholes.

They'll pay alright...... with fake Western Union moneygrams or fake money orders.
A lot of people dont like to work like that though. This isnt the 1850 market where the clerk states a price then you state a price and the haggling does commence. Most people nowdays have a fairly busy life and post something and hate to have their time wasted. When someone sends me a lowball I dont even reply back to them, its not worth my time to haggle for a price I wouldnt even want.Originally posted by: oogabooga
I'm a lowballer![]()
If you say price is FIRM I don't bother you. If you don't, then I'll make you an offer. I don't swear at you and by no means do I expect you to take whatever price I ask. In fact I try to be exceedingly pleasant during the whole thing (since you know.. i'm asking you to knock off from the price and I figure you catch more flies with honey than vinegar). I don't give you sob stories, I don't give you bullshit. I don't want to say it's just business but all I talk with you is numbers and how I feel about it.
The reason I lowball with you is cause I expect to start negotiating. You've told me what you want for it, I tell you what I want it for. Let's meet in the middle (or somewhere closer to one of our points)
In my opinion it's more polite, efficient, and beneficial to me and you to start lower. Doing something like this:
I see your price (lets say.. 330) I will probably ask for what I'd consider a really good price (200). I'll say "I'm interested and willing to pay 200 give or take, interested? let me know. etcetc."

is better than
Hey will you sell for 290 instead of 330? what about 270? 250... 240...
If i'm selling on craigslist and willing to sell for no less than the price I list I make sure I say price is FIRM or non negotiable. The one or two times I got lowball offers while selling they were people like me doing what I do. I'm lowballing cause I expect to start negotiating.
