My experience is that you will always get 70% of the people asking if you have it but never going beyond that. 15% of the others are lowballers and the other 15% are actually interested in buying.

I'm a lowballer :(

If you say price is FIRM I don't bother you. If you don't, then I'll make you an offer. I don't swear at you and by no means do I expect you to take whatever price I ask. In fact I try to be exceedingly pleasant during the whole thing (since you know.. i'm asking you to knock off from the price and I figure you catch more flies with honey than vinegar). I don't give you sob stories, I don't give you bullshit. I don't want to say it's just business but all I talk with you is numbers and how I feel about it.

The reason I lowball with you is cause I expect to start negotiating. You've told me what you want for it, I tell you what I want it for. Let's meet in the middle (or somewhere closer to one of our points)

In my opinion it's more polite, efficient, and beneficial to me and you to start lower. Doing something like this:
I see your price (lets say.. 330) I will probably ask for what I'd consider a really good price (200). I'll say "I'm interested and willing to pay 200 give or take, interested? let me know. etcetc."
I expect you to counter with something. Probably significantly higher.. say... 280. Great, I got you in the 200's.
I then probably say the most I'm willing to pay at the time, say 250. (I'm not looking to have 50 e-mails exchanged with you).

IF I get it for that, great! You the seller sell it and I get an item for cheaper than what I expected.
If not, then I move on. I'll thank you for your time, and keep 250 on the side in case you email me two weeks later saying "hey, still interested in X item at 250?"

is better than

Hey will you sell for 290 instead of 330? what about 270? 250... 240...

If i'm selling on craigslist and willing to sell for no less than the price I list I make sure I say price is FIRM or non negotiable. The one or two times I got lowball offers while selling they were people like me doing what I do. I'm lowballing cause I expect to start negotiating.

When I post stuff for sale on craigslist when if I listed FIRM pricing with no negotiations some people still try to lowball me. It's annoying, especially whenever I post firm pricing it usually means I've already seen the prices of the same item and decided on a price that's the absolute lowest, yet people still make up lame reasons and complain the price is too high.

the guy that lowballed me asking if I'd sell it for $150 today ended up buying for $330, I wanted to sell all 3 for $500 but I figured it might take too long so I broke it up and sold 2 items for 330, wanted 350 but he got here in less than an hour and I got money now. first thing sold on CL, wasn't as painful as I thought it would be.

They'll pay alright...... with fake Western Union moneygrams or fake money orders.

2) no matter if you offer it as NIB no way would i buy it for 10% below new. to many people are scamming and will re-wrape used crap. also many will lower the price more if you ask.

3) it does not hurt to ask.

4) yeah those are assholes.

+1

Espacially #2, i'd rather pay the extra 10% and get it at a store to be certain it was new.

I have had mixed results with CL. I have sold two automobiles through their listings and screened my responses to avoid looky-loos and time wasters.

I've had less luck with cheaper items and electronics.

Some people have done amazing things to sell their items. I bought a really nice modern office desk for only $10 and the guy delivered it for only $10 more. He helped me bring it in the house and was happy to make $20.

I always make a point of letting the good people know that I appreciate doing business with them.

A lot of people dont like to work like that though. This isnt the 1850 market where the clerk states a price then you state a price and the haggling does commence. Most people nowdays have a fairly busy life and post something and hate to have their time wasted. When someone sends me a lowball I dont even reply back to them, its not worth my time to haggle for a price I wouldnt even want.

I can't stand dealing with the losers on Craigslist. Stupid stupid people. It's not even worth my time to bother with anything on there anymore. Besides the fact that the website is horribly set up and not very functional (catagories, sections, everything needs to be changed for finding things better). That alone if frustrating but dealing with all the morons is just to much.

Craigslist always strikes me as the kind of people that couldn't make it in society and have gotten no where. That's why when you try to deal with them it's like they are from another planet. So clueless. They couldn't hack it in society, so they have no money, no real social skills, no accountablilty. And so there they are on a free sight where they might be able to gain some material things they could otherwise never get. And we are stuck dealing with them. Granted not everyone is but it's such a large percentage that it's enough to make you for a second shake your head in disbelief that these people live in your same city. Most of these idiots would be eliminated if they even charged a small fee. If even a dollar.

I know that might sound harsh but I've totally just stopped going on Craigslist because it was just to frustrating and depressing even. Shoot just out of curiousity go vistit the casual encounters section. These are the kind of people who are also trying to buy things from you. It's a disgrace.

I was just about to trade my Zen micro in for a PSP with 2 games, when the guy told me his gf (he was apparently getting the mp3 player for her and she was gonna meet me to trade) is going to the strip club to work and will call me later. Then he asked me if i mess with coke...

Needless to say, I told him I only mess with sprite...

i posted a fax machine once, almost new for $40. Brand new in store costs $70 and this guy emailed me asking it for $10. I replied back saying i'll give it to him for $10 if he can come wash my car & bathroom, never heard back from him after that
