F*ck that if I ever see one I'm hitting it with a bazooka

How interesting. A pest control guy to my house just yesterday claiming of a recent black widow outbreak. I thought he was full of it.

I'm in NM, where are you? I've been here a couple years and hadn't seen any before, altho can't say I was really in tune for what to look for.

I am in San Diego, I have yet to see one either, but he said he saw one on my property.

Hmm, I thought the BRS was mostly a southern frustration as well. I had a horrible infestation of them several years ago back in Oklahoma. I actually ended up moving because I couldn't put up with them anymore.

When I lived in the Southern Interior in British Columbia, we had Black Widows. Only ever saw them outside and usually in undisturbed places such as in corners and what not. Just had to look out for them while tending flower gardens and such. Rattle snakes were a much bigger problem then Black Widows though.

if you are allergic to spiders, like my mom is... having a run in with a black widow probably won't be the best experience of your life... might just be your last though. if you are healthy and not allergic, it'll just be a highly recommended hospital trip.

If I had seen the katydid before killing the b/w's, I could have given one of them a nice last supper... It might not have been good for my karma, but would have been fascinating to watch.

Be careful, they jump and are VERY aggressive. The young ones tend to stray away from the web and cause problems the most.

I first sprayed them with ortho bug spray, from a garden sprayer, before we stepped on them as they tried to hobble away. The freaking things both attacked the tip of the garden sprayer.

My neighbor was bitten with one last year i think it was... they caught a few, which is how they identified them...

Here's tonight's catch before I blasted it in its home with spray. Couldn't step on this one (nor verify his death...)

The power plant I work at is infested with black widows. They are literally everywhere. At night you have to wave a stick in front of you to knock down webs.

I hate black widows btw, the females here get to be half dollar size in diameter. The lower segment can be as big as an acorn.

Not to be too nitpicky... but the spiders in your pictures are all females. Male black widows are relatively small compared to the females, and are rather unremarkable. They do not feature the characteristic red hourglasses like the females do.

I hope I kill the ones around here before they've got an opportunity to grow that friggin large. That's just brutal. There's certainly enough meals out here in the southwest to eat heartily tho if given the opportunity.

Brain fart, fixed. After seeing pics of a male tho, my girlfriend is certain she's seen them as well.

If you need to kill a spider and really don't feel like touching the thing (hey, it's got spiky legs, I dunno wtf it is), go find a can of that compressed cold air. If you care about spiders, yeah it's cruel, but insanely effective. It also lets you take them down from higher areas, but once they land they don't start running away. Upside-right works fine by the way, you don't need to flip the can over.

Scorpions too, right?

Only way I'd live down there would be if I could have a hermetically sealed house.
