common theif? its just a waste of them, i just "liberated" the movies

There was a situation like this in ..... Canada..... that I read about about three or four years back. This guy was diving behind some high tech companies buildings and coming up with some decent stuff. From what I remember, the Canuck judges said that once it was tossed into the dumpster, the company had given up the right to the stuff as property. Not sure about US.

Good find!

are you sure its illeagal? I know if your trashcan is on the road by someones house you can take anything out and keep, and its legal. This is cause its gonna be trashed anyway, so i dont know about store dumpsters.

Yeah, I'm sure if you call the police and tell them what he was doing they'll get on it right away.

Technically it's legal from what I understand - once the product is in the dumpster the title to it goes to whoever claims posession of it first. Since Blockbuster knowingly placed it in an area where it could be taken they forfeit all rights to the title of the product, therefore it's not illegal. Now if it's brand new products that employees are stashing outside so they can take later - then if you were caught taking that, that's illegal, but not if Blockbuster told them to throw it out.

If you cut locks or chains your in trouble as well. I used to go dumpster diving all the time before BB and Circuit City got compactors. I hate compactors.

iew, used vhs copies of BAD movies. no wonder they threw em out. used dvds in the store are about 9.99 sometimes so vhs is basically worthless. on ebay shipping would kill your profit. either way, its just garbage, and blockbuster is evil anyways, i wouldn't touch their toxic trash.

*side rant
they've enstated a new policy where they will try to carry only pan and scan dvds. add that to the fact they release censored versions of movies.. they are not movie lovers at all..sick sick sick.

my daddy doesn't believe in DVD's (he forbidded my mom to buy a dvd player but we got the apex ad1500 anyways :)) or any video format other then VHS. He's old school like that :/ Also I don't believe that all movies will be converted to DVD because in film class we were studying how much it costs and things like that to convert/re edit/clean up a VHS from a DVD and how there are just too many good VHS movies that wont be converted so the VCR will never go extinct. I kinda got off topic there but score! Blockbuster is kind of weird, u know that R1G1F coupon that was up a couple days ago that was proclaimed a fraud... I didn't know it was a fraud and I went to blockbuster and everything worked fine, although the clerk did ask me where I got the coupon from... anyways... yeah... score :)

It's a natural step up from VHS though - like CD was to casette tape, DVD is to VHS. While we'll still have VHS players the switch to DVD is inevitable

yeah, but it will be a while until they start throwing away DVD's, when they do, they will have a new technology.

<< last week, about thursay, after coming home from a boring day at school, i stopped off at my local blockbuster store, to rent a movie for the weekend. i went the back way, becuase it was esier, and i noticed a bulge of videos out of the dumster. i went closer to investigate, and sure enough, the dumster was chok full of VHS movies, all new, and sealed. i went into blockbuster to get my movie, and went back out, now, with a fair amount of blockbuster bags, and i filled them. about three bags full of new release VHS movies, i got: 4 copies of each: scary movie, little nicky, the 6th day, the ladies man, bring it on, vertical limit, unbreakable..... the list goes on. now i have a little over 60 videos. but the next day, i made a fool out of myself, and went back to get more.... and i didnt relize the car wash acrosed the way, was open. so for one, i was digging Illegaly, in blockbusters dumster, and today, getting looked at by some very confused latinos.
i tried to look dignified, i looked at my watch, and tapped my feet, like i was waiting for somewone, and then when they were not looking, i reached in the dumster, and grabbed a few. and then after 20 min. or so of this, i left for the half a mile walk home, with four more bags full of movies. and then they dumped the rest. what a waste.
well.....er.. i thought id like to share that.

Hrmf.. they might tell you to not do it, but that's all I can see happening unless they're a jackass or they see a danger in your personal safety. They get nervous when they see a risk of someone getting injured on their property. They are, becausae when it happens people usually sue.

Some cities and counties have "nuisance laws" against dumpster diving specifically because of the inherent value of trash. Recyclables are not the only valuables in trash. The old adage, "a man's junk is another man's treasure" held true in your case. But, I still think its yuck...

you sure they're good VHSs? you'd think they throw them out for a good reason...maybe they're worn out if they're used, or maybe they ran them by some magnets or something before they threw them out...

I don't see how dumpster diving is wrong... I see why it needs to be illegal (to prevent trespassing and more importantly, you know people would start suing and scamming left and right).

But its trash, garbage... it isn't even going to be recycled! How can claiming something nobody wants, and are throwing away, be wrong?
