Fastmail has a free account lets you choose from lots of obscure domains. In fact, I used it so that I can register with AT in 2004.

I never post on H because of FS/FT. I know that anything I post might get me banned, and I want to keep my deals going.

And with their policies they seem to have too much protection for thieves.

One time I went to [H] to register and try it out... then I saw the restricted e-mails and new I'd be wasting time on that shitty site.

On H, being the lurker type I am there.. A year ago I thought it would be cool to bump a thread saying that AGP definitely died, don't stick out on old platforms and stuff like that in a x1950xt AGP thread I participated in 2 years before. I mentioned that I knew it was an old thread and wanted to get the point across about buying old hardware.

One "fail troll is fail" post later, Vertigo gave me an infraction:eek:
There's definitely something reeking over there, I don't really browse nor post at all often but I can smell it.

There is an H mod here. He has "acid" in his name. That's all I remember.

Meh. I like [H] for some hardware advice. I read. Not much talk there. Or I just PM people for help. There are a lot of asshats there and the whole forum with the pay to play and terrible ads does piss me off, but honestly, compare it to AT's hardware community, and you might figure we are a joke.

I like how they do have members who go through 20 batches of Dell 2407s before they're satisfied. They break down every rev code, date code, etc etc. Sorry, I see too many "What PSU should I use" threads on our hardware forums or "Is my 400W enough for an i7" that it's kinda old now. I'm glad we still do have some experts here, but a lot of my times it's good to be able to talk to some hardcore system builders/modders out there. And that's why I have to check out [H] at times, and read XtremeSystems

XtremeSystems is a lot of fun, those guys are nuts (in a good way) but I can't even stand to look at [H].

I frequent the [H] and think they have as much to offer as ATOT. Everyone likes to bash Kyle and a lot is deserved but, I wonder how many would be bashing Anand if he posted here frequently? The point is everyone disagrees with the decisions of the forum admins from time to time. So, why badmouth a forum for the attitudes of a forum owner or admins? They are not the forum, we are.

I've noticed, but perhaps it's just me. That in successful forums, as in populated with tons of people and not so many taking sides - the main admin is usually absent, or is a lurker him/herself. I dunno why this is but it seems to be true for many places I've signed up for. Felt like tossing that in somewhere out on the net

TBH, most of the forums on H devolve into something similar to what happens here on ATOT and/or our Video subforum. That's where most people have their complaints. If I want to hang out with a bunch of kids, I'll play some video games with the four I have at home, thanks.

Sure, let me just log in to [H] and unban you. Good thing you came to this forum to ask about that forum, otherwise you might have stayed banned forever over there! Boy are you smart.

It would appear that they have...cant get to it on any of my 3 computers...seems like they are trying to lock it down hard on me...

I still feel likes its some BS though...not because of the ban or what not, but just the ads...does ANYONE here have a reasonable answer as to why a forum from such a big site (which can run off of the cheapest server out there, if not for free if you have a second PC/decent connection) would need SOOO much money to run and operate? Im genuinely confused about this...I mean, Im not an expert, but I just cant see a forums costing that much money to run and operate!
Hosting isn't cheap. The discussion has come up on a lot of sites after that Ars Technica article about adblocking. On SilentPCReview, the owner mentioned that it costs about $500/mo just to host the site, and SPCR is peanuts compared to large tech sites like AnandTech or [H]. I'm sure they easily rack up thousands in hosting costs per month. Plus they have a larger staff of reviewers and other employees that expect compensation for their work. This is probably the biggest expense, because thoroughly reviewing a product can be very time consuming.

And that's just to break even. Considering the time and energy people like Anand invest into these sites, I'm sure they expect to make a little profit from them.

Still pretty lame to get banned for adblocking, though. I've heard enough bad things about [H] to stay away.
