Been a while...time to upgrade

It's been a long while since ive had to upgrade my computer, but right now things are looking pretty bleak for a few parts and they'll barely run anything anymore. I'd just like a little helpful advice on what to look for, im thinking of getting a new CPU and Video card, and if needed, a new motherboard as well. My current specs are.

AMD athlon XP 1900, 1.6 ghz
1g of ddr ram, not worried about this
Radeon 9600 series AGP
Asus A7V8X-X mobo

I dont look to run the top games at perfect speed and resolution or anything, but I would like more options to play from. Neverwinter nights 2 is probably the last game i got that ran with some level of decency.

So what would you suggest to upgrade and what to? Im not looking to spend a load of money here to get the top of the line, just to upgrade what needs an upgrade. Thanks for any help.

AMD route can be cheaper, look at socket AM2. Intel route can be faster but more expensive, socket 775 Core2Duo.
A budget would help though.
