Becoming Ordained Online and Performing a Wedding

So I'm going to get ordained online and perform a wedding ceremony - Can someone tell me how exactly this all works? What is the best place to do it, etc?

Is there anything I need to know about performing the ceremony? Do I basicalyl just perform the ceremony, read the proper lines about "the power vested in me" and sign the marriage certificate? How exactly does this stuff work?

Whats wrong with going to a traditional church or wedding chapel? If you're asking extremely basic questions like the ones in your OP, do you really think you are taking this seriously? Or is the marriage not expected to last very long so it doesnt really matter?

Just curious.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Myself, my brother, and my cousin all had ceremonies performed by people ordained online.

To the OP: Where will the ceremony take place? That's your biggest hurdle.

For example, in California ANYONE can do a ceremony. You get ordained online, sign the license, make sure the bride and groom both say "I do", say "I now pronounce you..." and it's 100% legal.

In Nevada, the laws have been hornswaggled by the 'cottage chapel' industry. So, while the state recognizes the ordination certain counties reserve the right to request proof of a congregation of at least 50 people before you can legally perform a wedding.

I believe the Universal Ministries website lists the specific requirements by state.

What's wrong with having someone close to you perform the ceremony instead of some guy, especially for people who never set foot in a church and don't want to hear a twenty minute speech about god and what the clergyman thinks of the institution of marriage?

Same here in Nebraska. I'd just call whatever courthouse the marriage license will be coming from and ask them the requirements.

Because sometimes it feels more right to have the ceremony performed by someone you really know, like your friend or sibling, than by just anyone who has "more proper" credentials.
 
Ministers cost money too--my dad has been ordained as a minister online, and told me that he would do it for free as long as it was with the guy of his choice.

He already has someone in mind. :|

Thanks! I called them up too, and it seems they want a copy of my ordination certificate - I went ahead and ordered it.

My Dad got ordained online and married my wife and I. I think it was the universal life church that he did, I can't remember.
