You don't have to be 21 to be a cop everywhere, that sort of thing is set by the agency (I'm only 20--my agency req. is 19). Here's our hiring process...

1. Fill out the intent to apply form.
2. Fill out the application (mine was about 16 pages) with a VERY complete background section. Include photocopies of your DL, social security card, etc.
3. Written exam.
4. Physical agility test.
5. Background investigation.
6. Polygraph.
7. Panel interview.
8. Physical examination.
9. Psych eval.

I would have gone with the "you're in need of all the brain cells you can muster" approach, but the law enforcement route works as well.

I have a bit of a record with getting busted with teh pot but only 3 times. This was from 8th grade to I believe 11th? Will this have any effect if its been expunged? Ive been really good though and havent gotten into any other trouble so I think Im good to go. Oh and whats that panel interview like? I suck at interviews and Im scared as hell about that part the most. lol

It'll still have an effect. Honestly, if I were you I wouldn't even bother applying to a large municipal agency, at least not right away. You'll almost definitely have to start at a very small agency, if even they will give you a serious look. Your chances are really dependent on how many others apply, what their records are like, and how well you do in the interview.

I assume you've had some sort of job interview at some point, likely one-on-one? Imagine having between 4 & 10 people interviewing you at the same time. And they're all cops. And the questions all pertain to your honesty & integrity.

I was considering Law Enforcemnt also... Chicago Police Dept. They have a minimum amout of college credit you need to apply (nonspecific if remember correctly, just some college). There is also a waiting period so dont quit your day-job.

I have heard from various sources that if its "I experimented a little with pot in college" its not a big deal anywhere (including the FBI), but if you come-off as a pot head then they will have a hard time hiring you.

Ya I take it they will be asking questions like "tell about one time youve helped somebody" and frankly my answer to that has always sucked ass because Ive never really helped anybody. Sh*t I dont think I can do this Im a really shy mofo.

We have a college requirement too (associates degree or equivalent is minimum, but roughly 70% of the dept. has bachelors or above).

Again, if your honest about your past & MJ is the hardest thing you've done, you may still have a chance. If there are a lot of other applicants with clean(er) pasts then you'll likely be passed over.

A few years in the military prior to LE would really raise your stock.

First things first! I need to start workin out. Im not fat or anything Im 5 11 145 but Im so out of shape and I think I would suffer badly in the military if I went in like this. I want to be at least 165 with plenty of muscle and stamina. How are you lookin?

I'm 6'5" 250lbs, and in decent shape. Our physical agility test is an obstacle course with a 60-second time limit...I did it in 48 seconds, and I'm in better shape now than I was then.

Glock 22 .40. Before I got this job I was hoping to get into investigations soon & go Federal shortly after that. After working the streets I've realized that I want to spend at least a few years doing this because I love it so much. SWAT officers here are regular patrol officers as well, so that's certainly a possibility. I'm sure I'll go into investigations and/or a Federal agency at some point, but it's hard to say when.
