Hello brothers--I too have been ordained for a few years.
I did it b/c I think it's funny, but haven't tried to reap any benefits other than a few laughs.

Some people at work freak about it tho b/c apparently they don't separate the legal fact from the religious sacredness
of being a "minister", and think it's a sacrilege to do this.
I say: "relax; don't be so anal and uptight".

db - There's some very good advice that goes something like:
"Don't ever discuss religion, politics, or (I forgot the third thing) at work."

If this is a serious job for you I would consider this advice.

Legal everywhere, the only problem state is Nevada. It is necessary to get a special cert from the church headquarters.
No special licience can be required by any state. I have a friend that was ordained this way and his motto is I will marry you anywhere anytime. He has done SCUBA weddings, 2 Skydiving weddings, and married lots of people who are not affiliated with any church. The only thing is you may NOT charge a fee for the marriage. donations only and expenses of course. One other thing, who ordained Jesus Christ??

I just got ordained.

I almost did not because I had to give my address and was unsure of the marketing angle... am I going to be mass marketed junk or crap to my home address? But I think this sort of non denominational church is great so I did it anyway.

If anyone out there has been unhappy with the ULC church's marketing it's too late for me but not the next person!

I guess that price would be a determining factor for people who cannot decide weather to become a Catholic Priest or a hairdresser, florist or interior decorator. :)

... as opposed to being ordained illegally? Is there such a thing as being ordained illegally? I don't think so. You might want to edit the topic to make the "hot deal" more evident. I'm missing it.

What legally ordained means is that the services that your preform as a minister will be legally recgonized as whereas any unordained joe schmoe's services won't be.

That's correct and most places charge a small fee to become ordained. This one charges nothing. That's the hot deal.

I was married by a ULC minister. He was the captain of the Stern-wheeler Columbia Gorge. We got married underneath the Bridge of the Gods up the Columbia Gorge.
Way better than some boring old church wedding. 150 pals cruisin up the river on a hot August night. It was great.
Aarg matey......Captain Tom's the name. Ag ag ag ag ag! Skin em with a rusty steak knife and toss em overboard!

I had a freind that was overweight. He was raised in a devoute church-going Catholic family. His weight and his religious weightiness made it hard for him with the ladies. He also never seemed to be able to find a satisfying job. He had a masters degree in English lit with a concentration on authors with Chistian/Catholic themes. The only jobs he could get were doing proofreading an obscure library research projects. Finally he joined the priesthood. Then he dropped about 50 pounds. Now he complains about single female parishiners trying to get him to break his vows. Ironic - eh? (Don't even joke. He ain't kiddy type.)

Turns out that many law cases determined that Universal Life Church ordiantion is not valid for marriages in many states, I still joined and I ordered the mini clergy package. 20 bucks. certificate and ID. Why not? it'll be great for a laugh. and I'm going to go get a priest shirt so I can sit at the bar and cause stares..

Uh, I think you are confusing a Minister with a priest, not really even close to the same thing!

This is what they say on the sample e-mail.

THE ULC IS LEGAL IN ALL STATES.

ULC MINISTERS MAY SOLEMNIZE MARRIAGES IN EVERY SINGLE STATE. MINISTERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING THEIR RESPECTIVE STATE'S REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS (IF ANY). If there are any difficulties in registering your credentials, please notify us. Check the state law section here to see if you must register in any certain state in order to do weddings in that state.

Some minsisters can and do use the priest-type shirt.

So this is how Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton became ministers....

It all makes sense now;):)
