I don't mind giving bar tip. That said, I usually go to bars that have tables, and go with a group of friends. And usually I want to see the beer menu / list of beers on tap and available by the bottle.

I'll give em a few bucks for a pitcher or a buck for a pint ...

You all do realize that servers make less than half of minimum wage per hour so that tips are actually their livelihood.

That depends on the state. Some states do not allow food service industry workers to be paid less than the state minimum wage for any other industry.

That being said, who gives a shit? If they don't like how much money they make, they can get a second job or a different job. It's the employer's duty to pay his employees, not the customer. If you work for someone who doesn't pay you, that's YOUR fault, not mine as the customer.

285 seconds of making cocktails = worth more than $5 in tips? I don't go to bars and have never had a cocktail so I don't know how much to expect in price even without tips, but I don't get it. How many customers does an average cocktail-maker-person get per hour?

I tip my hairdresser 40-50%. I tip 20% or more at most restaurants though I will tip less if things are unsatisfactory. I tipped my tattoo artist 15% yesterday; had no idea what to do there but 15% seemed reasonable.

For Hotels I usually leave a couple of bucks on the bed each day I get the cleaning done.

Its more about extortion to get service when its busy than anything. If you don't tip the exorbitant 'going rate' you will find yourself invisible when trying to get served.

That's pretty much it.

You want good service? You're a customer and my job is customer service, but fuck you unless you give me more money. You don't deserve customer service unless you give me MOAR MONEY! MOAAARRRRR!!

The entire concept of customer service is lost on people anymore because they're stupid, no-skilled self-centered greedy assholes.

I tip anywhere from 10-50%
At my favorite local Taqueria, where I go about once a week, almost every week, my meals usually cost around $10. I leave $4 or 5 bucks since they bring me refills on my coffee, and they bring us many chips and salsa and they always bring me the fresh habanero hot sauce...

If I go to a place where 2 people can eat for $100, and the service is slow/crappy, I don't give more than $10 tip.

That's why the percent tip guidance is retarded. Yes I can easily see tipping $4-5 for a low cost meal even if it is 50% because $5 decent compensation for a low skill position worker to be bringing you food and drink.
Now would you still tip 50% if you are at a place like TGIF where drink, entree, and a salad or appetizer will set you back $35 after tax.

...what, their own paycheck in compensation for doing their job isn't enough?

Sorry, if service sucks you getting a fat zero or a penny.

re: valet guy
if you want something out of your tip, tip before and not after.

ex) 20 people show up to the valet stand at the same time. $5 on top of the valet charge to the captain or one of the guys will usually get you to the front of the line.

also, per my previous experience, this graph is totes true:

Yes, that it absolutely correct.

Then I guess they should get a different job if they're allowing themselves to work for an employer that their state allows to abuse them. Get another job or get a second job. It is never acceptable to put the customer on the hook for the employer's responsibility.

LOL, I'm just glad I live in a country that doesn't have this stupid pay system for restaurant staff!
I would rather just pay more for my meal than worry about what to pay for some unskilled labour to bring me my meal .

LOL, notice it's all the dudes at the top of the scale dragging the whole thing right. Why? Cause they want to impress the hot waitress.

I worked in a restaurant 35 years ago and hated every minute of it. I did come away with an appreciation of just how hard everyone does work in the average restaurant though. To this day, I continue to tip well when my wife & I go out to eat because of that. And yes on the rare occasions when we have shitty service, I have left a $0 tip.

Tipping well at our favorite places means the staff knows us and we always get excellent service.

--Here's one that wasn't talked about-- Tipping cleaning staff in hotels. I travel a lot and would love to hear if people do this regularly or at all.

cheers.

I tip $3-4 a day to the hotel cleaning staff. I tip daily instead of at the end of the stay since it might be a different person cleaning the room each day. I find the cleaning service is better with the daily tip.

Everyone I know does this. Especially people who travel for work...You don't tip them directly - just leave some on the table/desk/dresser.

in the past 5 years of work ive spend over 50 weeks traveling
never left a tip, nor to my knowledge has anyone i traveled with

People who tip for bad service are just encouraging the bad service.

Also in many states they already make minimum wage plus tips so they're probably making at least 40k for not very skilled labor. Sure it's physically and mentally draining but so are other customer service jobs. There's a reason why there are so many people that are servers while going to school because you make decent money and don't need an education to do it.
