"Because I get to decide what we vote on."

The next time this asshole is up for re-election I hope any candidate brings this up in spades, even the GOP faithful are tired of the "pay to play" bullshit. The coddling of the ultra wealthy along with the outrageous actions of some Co's (cough, cough big pharma) should make all Americans vote a POS like this straight out of office.

Lock em up! All of them!

No. I shouldn't have to explain this although I get the sentiment.

Moving on.

Everyone who holds McConnell's position has that power and everyone uses it to their political advantage. Every single one, love or hate for an agenda notwithstanding.

What is unusual is the honesty that is revealed in the process. Mitch is saying that he has the power, that none can challenge him and that is enough so deal or not. Why does he do this? At the most basic level, it's because he can.

Republicans aren't going to change that on their watch and I doubt the Dems will when in power because of the most fundamental concept which exists in politics, the most important thing is the acquisition and retention of power full stop.

We need to hold our own accountable if they fail and it will take a generation at least to develop a people who value things more than the "company line" of political parties.

This is a systemic problem which dates back to the founding of these rules and they need to be changed.

Both sides isn't really appropriate, given that the Dems passed the measure in the HOR on a party line vote. There is a fundamental difference between the goals of the Party of the Lootocracy & the Dems, as well.

That's besides the point. This is an absolute power which will be corrupted. Although I favor the Dems far more than Republicans, this creates one party rule that subverts representation of the nation, idiots they may be.

If you are saying that abuse for nefarious purposes is far more common with Republican? That's what I believe too.

In any case, this isn't who is better or worse, this is a flaw, a crack in the supporting structure which comprises our system of government and it is not trivial- indeed it could be fatal.

Why does this 1 man senate obstruction stuff sound familiar....

I don't know Soul, I just can't place my finger on it.

Both parties have increasingly marginalized the minority, but the fact they could even do that reflects very poorly on our system of government. Bringing things to a vote should not rest exclusively on one man. Voting is how we hold our representatives accountable, and their votes are how we find out who they truly are and where they stand.

It is absurd that the minority cannot ever call the majority to a vote. A portion of the legislative "agenda" should belong to them. Say, 4 days a month. Of course they'd lack the votes to win, but having a vote is what matters. And holding our government accountable (read: transparent) should be the power of the minority.

Mitch realizes that the only way the Repub Party can retain power is that it attains and perpetuates minority rule over the majority.

To that end, he will do anything, say anything to make it happen, including packing the courts with conservative activists, sliding in any and all manner of exclusionary "voter rights" laws and stifling and squashing anything else that gets in the way of that agenda.

What I don't get about McConnell, on top of what others have said: he does realize that his balloon will eventually pop, right? That when the Republicans lose control of the Senate, they'll likely lose everything? And for that matter, does he realize that he's leaving a horrible legacy for himself and his party?

On that last front, I'm worried that he knows and just doesn't care, that he's willing to tarnish both his family and the Republicans just to hold on to power for a few years.

Turtleman is power-hungry and uncaring, even about his own delegates. All he cares about is hanging onto his seat, and "sticking it to the dems" as he's done so many times now.

Most ironic thing I ever heard was when he accused the democrats of obstruction. That was rich. 🙄

White conservatives have bought into it since Gingrich, at least. Witness the defense of McConnell for blocking efforts that a very strong majority of Americans want. It's this whole culture warrior mentality. Dunno wtf they think they're fighting against & I doubt they do, either.

Living in Kentucky is much less expensive than our former state of Connecticut but... goddamn, the culture!

McConnell has now said several times that this bill is designed to make it easier for democrats to win elections. It's quite a startling admission on his part.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...ming-easier-more-fair/?utm_term=.3b4f1028ad28

The column goes through the provisions of the bill and explains exactly what McConnell is saying...

  • If registration were easier and more people who are not registered now did so, that would mean Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If it were easier for people with disabilities to vote, Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If the practice of voter caging were outlawed, Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If we cracked down on deceptive practices and voter intimidation, Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If we let those with criminal convictions who have served their time vote, Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If we mandated paper trails for ballots to ensure accuracy, Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If more Americans were able to vote early if it’s convenient for them, Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If more Americans could vote by mail if they chose, Republicans would lose more elections.
  • If secretaries of state couldn’t administer their own elections, as Brian Kemp did in Georgia last year, Republicans would lose more elections.
That is what Mitch has now just openly admitted to.

They (Republicans) don't want you to vote, their refusal to even consider H.R. 1 proves that. The Senate will never get a chance to vote on this thanks to McConnell, the House did. Every single Republican voted no.

McConnell is 77. Crazy to think a 77 year old who's never worked a day in his life is basically running the country.

They're all beholden to the right wing lootocracy. Their messaging is all top down astroturfing. It's a package deal. They just have to spout the Company line to keep gettin' paid. Fox, Breitbart & a host of others are working hard for 'em to keep voters' minds right.
