I've always wondered why women's clothing was sized like that.
With mens clothes it's:
Pants Waist = X Inseam = X *crossreference shelf* Jackpot!
Work Shirts Neck = X Arms = X *corssreference shelf* Jackpot!
Otherwise it's S M L XL
Maybe because women will never accept an emperical measurement? Another mystery of the universe.
That's because (straight) guys don't care much about clothes. So if you're trying to sell them something, just make it fast and easy, so they can be in and out of the clothing department in five minutes, giving them more time to stroll through the hardware section. Basically, it's got to be logical, quantifiable, and straightforward for guys to buy it.
When it comes to women's clothing, though, they feel disappointed if they're able to find something they like within two hours. Your job is to completely fill the store with clothes that don't look right, don't fit, or have weird proportions, so that it takes them ages to find the ONE item that actually fits and looks right. Then they can go to their girlfriends and brag about finding "the PERFECT dress" yesterday. I mean, a lot of women don't have the right size AND proportion to fit perfectly into a standard size. And yet, the fashion industry doesn't change things...
Basically, men's stores sell you stuff you fit into. Women's stores sell you things that the fashion industry says you SHOULD fit into.
