Oh cool, just curious if there was something I missed 🙂. Must resist ordering this chair...

Be weary y'all. This looks ALOT like my chair which I bought last year froms staples...on mine the arms aren't adjustable and may be uncomfotable for you if you aren't 6 foot tall or better.

Just my two cents.

When did this happen?

<< Free delivery on most items over $50! >>

This looks a lot like one of the old OM deal chairs.

I decided to buy it after going to Staples and trying out a bunch of chairs. I didn't find this exact model, but I was happy with the construction and comfort of some of the even cheaper ones. My current computer chair is a crappy cloth chair with non-existent back support.

Parn, bigbigsavings -- and/or others who've received the chair -- a little assistance, please:

OK. got the chair ("SKU 445828"...Leather Executive Chair/85001&quot😉, assembled it...looks good, feels like the foam will last (altho I'm not really experienced about these things to judge for sure)...One problem, which may be "just me": How does the advertised-and-affirmed-in-Parn's-post tilt mechanism operate?

I ask for two reasons:

1) From other chairs at a local office store, typically one has only to push-in or pull-out the gas-lift-handle (used also to adjust the height of the seat) in order to free the seat to tilt forward or back. Attempting such an in-and-out movement seems to produce no effect on the mechanism mounted on the chair I received. Attempting to twist the lever forward or back also produces no effect. Rotating the cylindrical knob fully closed or fully open seems to make no difference. Give me a hint, please. I promise to blush offline. 😱 😉

2) The enclosed "General Chair Operation" instructions only say this:

<< Height Adjustment To lower chair: While sitting upright in the chair reach down at the right side of the chair and pull up on the gas lift handle. To raise chair: Take your weight off the chair and pull up on the gas lift handle. >>

"Doh!" There's no mention at all about TILT ADJUSTMENT in the "General Chair Operation". The seat plate does have a cylindrical knob that turns, which I would suspect relates to a tilt issue (-- locking tension? --) sooo...maybe it's "just me" and I'm not operating the tilt adjustment correctly (wherever it is).

The literature enclosed is from "ACT IV Industries Ltd" Model #85001. "Italian Style & Technology" (even includes "Istruzioni Montaggio" in Italian!) Parts list describes: "Seat Plate With Locking Tilt" soooo, it looks like this model is supposed to support tilt. 🙂

Is this the same model chair everyone else has received? The seat shape and material seem as advertised (with very firm lumbar support), but I suppose the seat-plate mechanism can easily vary without much notice until one actually attempts to operate its features...assuming all the features are there and in working order.

(I'll call 1-800-678-5891 on Monday if no answer is forthcoming this weekend.)

Anyone know of any Staples free after rebate stuff? Just so I can bump it over $100 ... I can't seem to find any!

JD: There's a tilt lock on it. To release the tilt lock, push in the height adjustment lever (towards the attachment of the lever). To adjust the tilt spring (how hard you have to push to get the tilt), spin the knob in front of your gas lift "pole" (with the lack of a better word... in my vocabulary).

Let me know if this doesn't help 🙂

JD,

That knob you are referring to controls how tight or loose the chair is. If you rotate it all the way to one side, you'll barely be able to recline in the chair and if you rotate it all the way to the other side, the slightest push back will let you recline.

I hope that helps?

Alex

IronChefM - Here is a working link to the OfficeMax chair. Judging solely from the pictures and posts I would choose the Staples chair over the OfficeMax chair simply because it seems more sturdy and will be just as comfy 2-3 years from now. The OfficeMax chair seems just as good but the padding is probably really soft and appears to be a smaller chair.

I still say the BEST ADVICE is to visit a Staples or OfficeMax B&M near you, find the exact same model (using the SKU) and sit in it. Test it out then decide if you're going to buy it or not.

Parn, bigbigsavings:

OK...now the lever's working. I think it was just "frozen" for a bit and wouldn't slide in-and-out...After some "persistence," the lever finally pushes-inwards, and I am now able to tilt the seat. (Eventually, the lever has come to slide more smoothly.)

Is the lever only supposed to lock when it is in horizontal (i.e. non-tilted back) position? Presently, the lever doesn't seem to want to lock, if the chair is in a tilted-back position; it currently only locks when I return to upright position. Is that how it's supposed to operate? (I'll keep fiddling with it a bit.)

Thanks for your replies.

(The chair seems durable...and my posture is kept from slumping in this chair.)

Ok, this is a tangent...but if you are thinking of buying this chair, AND you got in on the free-after-rebate DYMO label printer recently, Staples has refill label tapes for $10.99. That makes you total $100.98, just enough to apply the magical $25.00 off coupon.

JD: Yeah, i don't think it locks in tilted position. If you look at the back end of your seat attachment, you can see the white block that is attached to the lever, which fits in between the chair and the metal piece that allows the tilt, effectively "locking" the tilt. The design of the mechanism just won't let it lock at tilt position... sorry.

Thanks, Parn...Just wanted to make sure the lever mechanism is in full working order, since the lock-mechanism wasn't performing smoothly initially.

I think I'll be satisfied wth this chair.

Don't bother with the OM chair. I bought that about 4 months back, and I'm not too thrilled with it. It's cheap Pleather. And I'm already starting to flatten it out and it's quite thin and flat. But then again I got it for around $50 a while back so I shouldn't be complainin. Highly recommend the staples chair over the OM chair anyday as the staples chair just looks that much more comfortable.

To the folks who already HAVE this chair...I'm a pretty big guy and most chairs with arms like that are just a little uncomfortable for as long as I find myself at the PC. But from the online picture it looks like the arms might be removable. Is that the case? If anyone can tell me, I'd appreciate it.

The arms are actally used to hold the back and seat parts together, so the only way to remove the arms would be to cut off the arm part you don't want... but i wouldn't recommend that cuz it will probably make the whole setup weaker and easier to break.

So no, you can't remove the arm rests without cutting it up.

What a terrible terrible terrible chair.

I just got it today.. put it together.. my friend was here.

We're both staring at it while I'm making it and it looks comfortable. I swear to God, I sat down, and started CRACKING UP. It was SO uncomfortable and the arm rests were all low (I'm 5'08). I swear.

I looked at my friend and told him to try it. He sat down and started cracking up just as bad as I was. 🙂

Thanks staples, here goes another return for you. My recommendation, never buy chairs online (this was my third, none satisfied me). Go buy a nice one from the store. 🙂

I got my chair shipped today.

I have a completely opposite opinion. I think it's an awesome chair. The armrests could be higher and more level, but that's just a nitpick. The cushioning seems like it will last, and I enjoy the lower back cushioning although I realize some might not like it.

Thanks for posting this deal!

I excluded chairs with the typical horizontal-extending arms, because I like sitting with the seat raised. With a raised seat, typical horizontal arms on chairs can block the sliding of so-designed chairs *underneath* standard-height desktops, leaving one further away from a desk's edge than desirable (for me). I've tried this with a number of chairs at Office Depot. Chairs with rounded-down arms (as this one) are far from "terrible" (to me), simply because they address a key issue for me. The chair I'm in now has armrests, but my arms usually rest on the desktop/hands-on-keyboard-or-mouse. I rarely find myself in the "Lincoln" position (as in Lincoln Monument 🙂 ).

I'm more concerned with the durability of the foam. My first impression is that the foam on this chair will endure...but only time will tell.

As for "comfort"? Matter of personal preference, whether firm or "cushy": I'm not 5'8".
