"early 1980s shipyards that supported the economy of the Beaumont area closed"

Just curious where these jobs/shipyards went. A coworker from the Houston area used to brag about all the shipping.

The Port of Houston is booming. And will continue to boom with the expansion of the Panama Canal.

As for shipyards. Those are few and far between across the entire US. They are not competitive with the Euro and Asian shipbuilders.

I guess that must be for the people who were born and raised in the area as the engineers/operators/rotating machinery specialist that work in the refineries, chemical plants, and Goodyear are quite smart and have degrees from some of the best engineering universities in the country (Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Perdue)

I believe the article is talking about the educational outcomes of the cities. So yes it means the people from there which make up most of the population as most do not leave the place they are from.

yea i hear Rice is a shit school.

Rice is a private school. An elite private school.

When people refer to an education system, they are generally referring to primary + secondary. Not post secondary(college).

Texas is dismal when it comes to education. They pushed back raising the standards on the STAAR exams until 2021. Right now the passing standards are so low its not even funny. Some are as low as 36% correct. Another is in the 43% range IIRC. Even with these low standards the overall passing rate of students is so low its not even funny.

Everything east of Houston and West of Atlanta is a desolate wasteland of stupidity, obesity and humidity.

Aren't Beaumont and Vidor considered "Sunset" towns?

I go 20 miles outside Silicon Valley and it is a shithole.

Wonder if I go to Beaumont with a slightly thick stubble... would I get physically attacked?
