Beat Super Mario Galaxy over the weekend

I beat it over the weekend. 70 stars or so. I really did enjoy the game. I think nintendo did a really good job.

Next up: Metroid Prime 3

I've not yet played it although a friend of ours has it and I'm sure he'd let me borrow it. I've heard nothing but rave reviews for it though.

Honestly though, when was the last time the boys at Nintendo put out a bad Mario platformer (although I didn't play/know much about Sunshine)? MB 1, 2, 3, SMB, Mario 64 were all fantastic.

SMG was fairly evolutionary as 3D platformers go. Definitely one of the better Wii games out there. I'd like to see a 2.5D Donkey Kong Country myself.

Other than a few levels with uneven difficulty, Sunshine was a good game as well.

But Rare doesn't seem likely to develop one...

I thought Sunshine was good, though some levels were uber hard for me. I liked the music, especially the Mario theme music in whatever that vocal style was.

SMG is great.

Who said it has to be Rare? Doesn't Nintendo own the IP?

How "easy" are the controls? I'd love to get my wife into a game like this but other than Boom Blox and World of Goo she's mostly video game illiterate.

That is correct. Nintendo owns the IP and let Rare, who was partially owned by Nintendo at the time, develop Donkey Kong Country. If Nintendo wanted to, they could still contract Rare to make a new DK Country game but that is unlikely.

I would say the controls are fairly easy to grasp. not a steep learning curve. The only issue i might see arising is the orientation as you are always changing where the floor is.

You run around tiny globes, flip gravity and run upside down, stick to walls, etc etc. My fiance got kind of dizzy.

My wife gets nauseous watching me play Portal...hrm.

I just wanted to chime in and say how underrated I thought SMS was. I know it's a break from the norm but sometimes you just have to accept a game for what it is. I enjoyed the difficulty spikes in that game, as all previous "mario" games have been rather easy for me. Some of the music was amazing!

PS -- haven't played SMG. I'm Wii-less.

SMG is the most fun I've had playing a Platformer ... and I not only beat the game, I got all the possible stars for both Mario and Luigi. Only did Luigi because my wife wanted to play, and so we played alternately for my second run through. 242 stars 😛

100 for Mario, 100 for Luigi, and I guess there must be more bonus stars that you can get.

There are 121 for Mario ... 121 for Luigi

Star Checklist

I never managed to finish the game with luigi, though I think I got most of the mario stars... I think. I know I got over 100... I'm pretty sure I got over 100..

Have her give a try at being the 2nd "player." With the 2nd wii-mote, she can help by collecting starbits, shooting starbits at badguys and holding certain badguys and platforms still while you control mario. 2nd player can also make mario do a double jump.

I just got the game yesterday and have been really impressed. I have never played anything like it. Really innovative with the multiple globes and such.
