I want to try and go for that "scruffy"... by all means I don't wanna grow a beard, but I've been told that the "scruffy" look looks good on me. I don't have a trimmer so I have to shave it off before I look like a bum. If I pick up a trimmer, do I just find the height setting I want and pass over my face with it? Also, can you recommend a good trimmer? Thanks.

I've got an 'el cheapo Wahl beard trimmer that I bought from walmart about 5 years ago for $15. Still works like a charm. I have pretty much a full beard going if I don't shave every 3 days so I think I can lend some help here.

With me, if I just use the trimmer on my face, it will leave you stubbly. Meaning, the hair isn't long enough that you could grab it with your fingernails, but you still can see the darkness of it on your face and kind of gives you that unkempt look that you get if you don't shave for a day or two.

Putting the guard on, and taking all the way down to the lowest position will *almost* trim the hair down to the skin, but it will be just long enough to maybe be able to grab it with your fingernails.

One click longer on the guard and you will actually have some length to the hair and it keeps things neatly trimmed. I always use this setting to trim down and tidy up.

Never really keep my facial hair long enough to take the guard any higher.

My gf loves it when I'm "scruffy"....she even says it that way. The only problem is that if I don't shave, after 3 days, the hair on my neck really starts to itch. I basically just do a complete shave about once every 3-4 days and let it grow back. It's the easiest to maintain, though shaving is can be much more difficult when it gets too long.

Bout like me. I only use a straight razor when I've got a business meeting or we are going to a party or a reception. Otherwise, I just let the stubble grow out to where it's long enough to run a guardless beard trimmer over it and be done with it. I probably shave once every 4 days.
