People on the scene heard him saying, "Can someone take a look at my head? Some fvcker just beat the sh!t out of me with a frying pan."

I agree, that was just mean to kill him, not his fault the hospital has automatic doors.

i think the cop just shot the bear, and then worried about making up an excuse later

When you sedate an animal, especially one as large as a bear, it can take over an hour for the drugs to kick in....that's another hour of the bear loose in the hospital

By looking at the topic title, I was thinking of the Simpsons episode where Homer had knee surgery, then tried to skip out on the bill by proclaiming to Dr. Hibbard, "Look, a bear!" Then, in walks a bear.

Yes, sounds like the cop did the old "shoot first, ask questions later" in this instance.

You don't think a 300 pound adult black bear can't knock a door down? The cop's first priority is the safety of the people, not the bear.

That sucks...but how weird must that be if you're a freshly released patient and you see a bear in the hospital? I'd be wondering what drug was causing the odd halucination.

If a bear is capable of ripping off your face, then it could definitely knock down a door.
The article mentioned that the room only sustained minor damage (I'm assuming it wasn't that hungry), so it seems that the cop pulled the trigger quickly. However, if the bear began to act violently, I would have no problems doing as the officer did.

The article said the cops considered sedating it but then decided that for general safety it was better to shoot the bear.

Can you imagine how much the city would be sued for if the bear happened to get loose and seriously injure or kill someone before they managed to get it fully sedated? With the police already on the scene, if they let that bear somehow attack someone, the city would be sued for sure.

I agree that it was unfortunate that the bear was killed, but under the circumstances, it seems the only option.

I agree human safety is the #1 priority (see above post). I was just considering other options, I'm sure the bear could've been disabled with a few gunshots, rather than going to the full extent (killing it).

THen you'd be looking at cruelty to the animal. You can't wound something on purpose, ever. Hunters code.

Not to mention the small detail of then having to deal with a wounded, pissed off bear.

Wounding the bear in an effort to disable it would immediately put everyone in the general vicinity at great risk. You do not want a wounded and enraged bear on the loose looking for something to swat.
