Beach Vacation Spots in the Northeast

So title says it all. I'm in desperate need of a vacation soon, in spring/summer or so. I live in Albany, NY and was wondering if anyone knew any good beach vacation spots in the northeast. Something kinda young, and fun, that has nice restaurants, couple bars/clubs. Also some places to shop and things to do, and a good beach. I'm used to going to Myrtle Beach which has TONS of stuff, so no I don't expect that, but maybe just a smaller version. Nice afforadable beachfront hotels, places to eat and things to do. Any ideas? I had New Hampshire has some nice places, Also I heard Maine has some nice places. I'm not a fan of Jersey, and didn't like Oceancity MD when I was there. Otherwise the floor is yours.

and theres only one place to go!

Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard in MA
Camden, Bar Harbor in ME

Note - none of the above would I consider affordable

New Hampshire: Hampton Beach, Fireworks, Beach Music and a Submarine. The state may have only 18 miles of seacoast, but the beach options suit families on vacation. Hampton Beach provides hours of carefree activities from fantastic fireworks every week, 14 in all, to 80 free summer concerts along a boardwalk. Soft ocean breezes and miles of sandy beaches await discovery. Each August the annual Children?s Festival includes magic shows, puppets, storytellers, contests and costume parade. Off beach bonus: Board a submarine at Albacore Park in Portsmouth and see what life aboard a sub was like. Was just looking at hampton beach, looks nice. How is the water, cold? Are they any waves to speak of there?

waves are big(relatively speaking) water is usually cold.
beach is packed after memorial day-labor day
but there is alot of fun to be had just north just south and all around.

It's New England... the water will always be cold. I can tell you that beaches facing the open ocean on Cape Cod can get down in the low 50's during the summer and as high as mid 70's depending on the currents and weather patterns. I would assume most other open ocean beaches in the vicinity will be similar.

In particular Hampton Beach is going to be colder then most beaches on Cape Cod, but it's by no means too cold to swim in.

The time of the year will also affect the temps quite a bit, early summer months like May/June will be far colder then August/September. When are you going?

Jersey coast - Brigantine, LBI, Atlantic City, Cape May, Wildwood, Ocean City (NJ - alcohol free town though...)

Was planning to go to Bar Harbor last summer but it was 8 and a half hours from NYC. Worth the drive?

I think so. My wife and I have stayed at a B&B there, and that area stands out as one of our favorite vacations spots.
