VALPARAISO?After his performances at the Beijing Olympics, Michael Phelps seems to be the apple of America's eye. The media talk about him and his medal count incessantly, sometimes at the unfortunate expense of his teammates.

Despite the support Phelps is getting from America, he doesn't seem to think he owes the country the respect it deserves. Does he not know the words to our national anthem, or has he just decided not to sing because it will become mundane after hearing it eight times in Beijing?

I haven't seen him sing the anthem once. Come on, buddy, these are the Olympics. You represent your country.

I give Phelps credit for being an amazing swimmer who has accomplished an incredible feat. But he can put his selfish personal interests aside and sing the national anthem. At the very least he could stand still and not talk to the guy next to him or laugh during its playing.

During one relay medal ceremony, Phelps and Ryan Lochte were talking and laughing. I couldn't believe their blatant disrespect for America, the country they are representing.

We're all rooting for them; singing and respecting the anthem would be a nice "thank you."

Yeah totally agree with you. But I have to be an apologist and say that he's won so many medals that he's probably lost all the pride and emotion of representing his country.

People are seriously complaining that he didn't sing the national anthem? Wow, slow news day?

They are right. Right now, Phelps is the apple of America's eye. So, in true American style, it's time to bring him down.

A lot of people care about Michael Phelps and the Olympics. I doubt anyone cares that you don't watch the Olympics.

Don't care if he sings. But he should not be talking and laughing while the anthem is playing.

umm, is it customary for the winner to sing the anthem? I've been watching the olympics since I was a little kid, and RARELY have I seen the athlete actually sing along.

Sing it? Is she fucking stupid?

Being quiet and respectful while it's played I can understand, but upset over him not singing it? Get a fucking life ya bitch.

Meh, I wouldn't sing if I were up there but I wouldn't be laughing and talking while the anthem was playing either.

Blind patriotism is idiotic--almost as much so as those who demand it from others.

I'd go with this, but it doesn't exactly work me up to much either.
