I have never understood college rankings either pre or post BCS.

#20 Michigan gets beat by #7 OSU and Michigan falls.

Isn't a #7 supposed to beat a #20?

Ya it rarely works out that way. Sometimes you'll see a #25 put up a good fight against the #1 team and get bumped up a few spots. But usually a loss means you drop, no matter what. If it was a tough loss to a good team, you'd creep back up later.

But in this case Michigan didnt just lose to a better team, they played pretty shitty. Thier much heralded offense never showed up. The senior super stars who "guaranteed" a win over OSU since last year, choked again. They put up a whopping 3 points and couldnt even break 100 yards of total offense.

So where does USC stand in all of this if we win out?

Well, USC can still make the Rose Bowl if they beat ASU and UCLA and Oregon loses one game (which seems unlikely). They're tied in-conference but Oregon beat them, so they get the berth as it stands now.

Isn't dixon out for the season? I bet that improves our odds a bit, but then again I don't know what the rest of OR's schedule looks like either

UCLA then Oregon State. I think Oregon can be beat by either team without Dixon on the field.

It is possible, but both UCLA and Oregon State are better then Arizona, so I'd say it's pretty likely that Oregon looses at least one.

and they lost to a I-AA school. No way they even deserve a ranking

According to Sagarin's rankings, Appalachian state is better then half of Div 1-A football teams. (and 12 BCS conference schools). They are better then all but 1 of LSU, WVU, Ohio State, ASU, and Oregon's OOC opponents and better then all of Kansas' OOC opponents. Only Georgia and Oregon of the BCS top 10 teams played decent OOC schedules.

Rather then complaining about Michigan playing a Div-1AA school, they should be commended for playing a better opponent then most teams would dare to schedule.

UCLA lost to Arizona by 9, Oregon St. beat Arizona by 15. Oregon St. lost to UCLA by 26. Football math doesn't work.

Edit: Just to further reinforce that, UCLA lost to Notre Dame by 14 (!!) then knocked Cal out of the top 10 the following week.
