BCS formula experts, help me design a league system for Settlers of Catan.

I'm looking for some ideas here. I have a general idea of what I want to do. I have a pretty good group of friends who all like to play Settlers of Catan. The problem is that when a game gets out of reach for some players they stop playing competitively. I have decided I want to setup a 'league' for me and all my local friends/family.

The general premise is that any 'league' game will be scored. You will get points based on how many points you scored that game and divided by how many 'league' games you'ved played, giving you an average rank score. In addition, I'd like to award a bonus modifier for the quality of opponent you play against. I was thinking of modifying your points scored based upon how many points total are scored by every player in that particular game. For high scoring (competitive) games your victory points will be modified upwards, and low scoring games modified downwards. Similarly, I'd like to modify for quality of individual opponents in that game as well. So their average score over the course of the season will modify the scores of everyone in the game.

At the end of the season I will take the top 6 players in league ranking to have a finals match up where we award the winner based on a 2 or 3 game aggregate score.

Other ideas I have considered is giving additional bonus points for winning (similar to what Nascar does).

I'm open to suggestions/ideas. Has anyone ever done anything similar to this? Or perhaps have insight to how the BCS formulas work?

I think you'll want more of a NASCAR approach than BCS. BCS has to incorporate things like strength of schedule and voting by people who are some combination of biased, uninformed or just dumb.

With a NASCAR like approach, you can give points out for a win, then fewer points for second, third etc. Give a substantial bonus for winning vs. placing second so that you don't reward overly conservative play too much. Do all the games have equal numbers of players (I'm guessing no)? You might want to award more points in a game with 6 vs. 4, since it should be harder to win.

Why not a skill based system like chess or online gaming? Everyone starts at 1500 and gains or loses points based on who they play. Points per win rewards playing more games vs easier competition instead of skill.

edit, nm forgot settlers is not a 1v1.

A skill based system is probably the best way to go. Beating up on the weakest player week in and week out gets you a lot of wins but means little.

I like that system, any idea on what type of algorithm they use that that?
