single hard drive with xp installed first, then vista, vista boot fine, xp when selected at os choice reports 'ntldr' missing.

from vista i can see that ntldr is there in xp, from 'msconfig' >sys configuration >boot tab, only vista is listed, if memory is correct 'earlier version of windows' should be there, but its not.

anyone been successfull at editing the BCD to add xp back in ?

I think 3rd party may be your only option, I believe this is what happens when you install vista after XP, it overwrites your MBR and it does that by design. Here is a tutorial on how to fix the BCD using EasyBCD.
