well now we know you've never ridden a bike before. So I guess there's that.
 
Simply put, that stretch of road being only a single cars width isn't wide enough for a safe overtake of...well anything.

If the cyclist was in the gutter, and the van went for an overtake, the van would either be dangerously close to the cyclist (accelerating vehicles, especially large ones, create quite a strong undertow when overtaking, and you can get sucked in), or dangerously close to the oncoming traffic.

Therefore the sensible option is to wait until the road is clear.

Now unfortunately, mr cyclist here knows that 98% of UK motorists haven't got a fucking clue about how to drive, and are extremely dangerous and will do stupid stuff at the tip of a hat, so mr cyclist holds a central position on the road to force the traffic behind to drive safely. This is well within his rights so long as he is moving faster than 10mph.

Unfortunately, mr white van man knows nothing about laws and regulations, and tries to kill him.

Hard to tell in the video but it looks a bit uphill and is definitely a blind corner also - hence the white solid line. In more dangerous areas (e.g. downhill approach a stop sign) I will absolutely do what I call "take ownership of the lane" just as this cyclist did and plant myself firmly in the middle of the lane. Quite simply, it is the safe thing to do, as long as you do it safely.

I can hit 35 on my slow assed MTD on one of the hills I ride and it's not that much of a hill. Non riders have no clue.

There was a group (20 or so) that was going to different cities in S.C. promoting riding. Downtown was closed of so they had a loop to sprint on. They'd fly by in a pack. The wind they created would blow your hair back. My 2 y.o. thought that was the greatest thing along with the road noise.

Far be it from me to infringe on your rights to the road. When some dickhead runs over you because you couldn't give a few feet, my condolences.

Looked real safe for the biker in the video, owning the lane. Point being, it only takes one dickhead.

Few years back, a group would ride across the river on a 2 lane curvy 55MPH road. 3 wide and 5 or 6 deep. They had the right of way, except for the 3 wide part. Some guy gets his road rage on a hits a few of them and leaves the scene. Couple of months later, one guy dies. The driver gets something stupid like 1 yr probation. I'm sure the dead guy's family put "He had the right of way" on his headstone.

You don't have pistols do you? Anyway, in that case, I could give the guy my wallet. I have an option. You have no option if the driver decides to run you down. I could also show him my stance of dominance.
 
Id say both are at fault. Cyclist for well...cycling. Hate cyclists. Get a fucking car and go the speed limit for fucks sake. And also the driver for potentially trying to injure or kill someone.

In my experience as a biker (and pretty much all the fellow bikers I've talked to) it's much safer to ride in the middle of the lane. One, riding to the side of the road invites unsafe passes, people are much more likely to make unsafe pass thinking what's the big deal if you bike as far to the side as possible. Two, paradoxically, I've found people give me much more space when passing me when I ride in the middle of the lane, if I ride in the middle of the lane they are much more likely to completely move over when passing me giving me good 3-5 feet of space, when I ride to the side of the road, they will often give me only 1-2 feet of space when passing me with throttle wide open.

So yeah, all it takes is one dickhead, but dickheads aside I'm much safer riding in the middle of the lane.

Hasn't been my experience but I've never tried riding in the middle of the road either. This is the redneck South. Guess I'll keep doing what I've been doing.

One dickhead like the one in the van? That's the only one it takes. Be safe.

The point: if there is insufficient room for cars to safely pass. the number of dickheads who are willing to run a cyclist off the road when said cyclist is taking the lane is less than the number of dickheads who are willing to run a cyclist off the road when said cyclist is riding as close to the curb as possible.
 
Cycling in the UK seems really dangerous.

If you don't leave room to pass drivers will be angry, if you do leave room they'll drive past at full speed with no room to spare.

Pretty sure I never defended the driver. Maybe I'd better go back and read my posts....Nope. Never did.

If I refuse and he has a gun in my face, he's still the problem but my attitude might get me dead. The fam could testify about my stance of dominance on my headstone.
