I built a low end system for my wife this past weekend. I thought I'd save a few bucks buying the keyboard and mouse locally instead of paying shipping.

So, I stopped by BB on Saturday which was wall to wall with last minute Father's Day Shoppers? Anyways, after checking the shelves, I discovered the cheapest wired keyboard and mouse there were $50 each! WTF!

I left being pursued by hordes of credit card and service plan pushers and got a cheap keyboard and mouse at Walmart for a total of $25 bucks.

Best Buy has no reason to stock peripherals that won't turn a huge profit because they are the low and middle range consumers that don't always know what they are getting when they buy their stuff.

Walmart's philosophy is to sell cheaper goods in larger quantities, so yeah, no surprise there.

Probably could have found something a little more along the lines of quality at one of the office supply stores, though.

Went to Best Buy Saturday and for once I found myself needing the assistance of the fellow in the networking department. I wanted to get a new router for my girlfriend. Hers has been acting up lately. I knew I wanted a D-Link but all they had were the new wireless-N models. The label said backwards compatible so that was all good. However the shelf prices were labeled with a wireless USB adapter where they had the routers so I needed a price check. The guy saw my confusion and came over to help me out. Price checked for me and since it was 70 bucks and not 100 so I went for it. +1 for helpful Best Buy guy.
Cashier tried to get me to sign up for a rewards card but I declined on account of I get enough junk mail already and I buy something from BB so infrequently it wasn't practical. At least he didn't harp on it.

you think that's bad, a decent wifi card is still $80!

best buy fucking fails. and yet the yuppies still line up by the dozens at 10am on sunday because there is some shitty emachine on sale for $519 (WOW!) and there is a 'limit' of 3 per store.

the only limit is how many they can sell.

Best Buy = Poor service, high prices, semi-decent selection.

Unfortunately, their primary competition, Circuit City, isn't much better. BB at least has a decent website ordering system. Half of the time you order anything from CC, their online inventory isn't always correct with store inventories...

Usually BB is out of whatver I happen to be looking for at the time, because BB sucks, but incidentally I bought my Wii from them when they randomly had a few in stock at like 5PM a few months back.

I only shop there for loss-leader items, or if something is less there than online (which is rare, but does happen.
Otherwise I shop from right here in my seat.
I'm not sure why people complain about it, you either shop there or you don't, it's a choice.

I never go to BB for computer parts. I'm even aprehensive about A/V accessories. All of those are profit-margin inflated. Lucky I have a wide network of mom & pop computer stores a couple blocks down the street.

BB really doesn't deserve the bad reputation it gets. It caters to a different crowd than the sort that congregate here.

That said, it IS possible to get good prices at BestBuy on bigger purchases. I bought my TV there at $600 under their ad price thanks to a Fry's pricematch, & just yesterday I picked up a receiver. MSRP was $500, online prices were 350-380 for the shady sites & the reputable places were doing $400. I found a local store that had them in stock that was willing to do $380, & BB pricematched it without an ad or even calling them to verify. Last week I got in on the Walmart PS3 deal, again - BB price-matched without an issue.

I primarily use them as a place to get hands-on time with things before I buy them. They are my first choice for larger electronics purchases due to their financing (hurray for 0%) and my good experiences with price matching.

I don't know about any of that, my local BB didn't price match anything for anyone unless it was a tiny difference on an expensive product.

how did the walmart price match thing work, I want to try it and use my sony card.

Walmart had 40 GB PS3's on "sale" for $399 with a free $100 gift card. BB setup a special SKU for their stores to use to pricematch it. Bought the PS3 last week & used the $100 + the $50 HD-DVD gift card towards the receiver.

bb caters to the tech ignorant crowd.
and exploits their ignorance. their entire business philosophy revolves around suckering folks.

I have a $20 BB gift certificate, and I was there on Saturday looking for something to buy. I wound up buying Letters From Iwo Jime for $7 and not spending the gift cert because there was absolutely nothing that I wanted at their inflated prices.

I may go back tonight and grab a $50 clearanced/open box home theater system for $30 and then resell it. ;)

They gave $50 gift cards to the suckers who bought HD-DVD players. So the gift card was his method of (partial) payment, he didn't combine any promotions.

I actually like Best Buy. I usually go at least once a week to pick up new DVDs although I'm planning on slowing down a little as I hold off future purchases to make the slow transition to Blu-Ray (still waiting for Blu-Ray disc to drop in price) and HDTV.

I have gotten lots of great deals at Best Buy. Some recent ones off the top of my head:

1) $19 Dynex Computer Case
2) $129 VisionTek 3870 512MB PCIe card
3) $49 VisionTek 2600XT 512MB PCIe card
4) $149 TomTom ONE LE (Considered by many to be the best version last Black Friday)
5) $52 RocketFish (Lian-Lian clone) Computer Case

And lots of cheap hard drives that were on clearance.

And I've gotten nice fair prices on other electronics stuff like my PS3, Wii, Digital Camera, Home Theater Receiver, TV etc.

I got in on both of those deals, and that's part of the reason (and only times) I go there.
It's about cheap Verbatim DVD+Rs this week.
