I need to get from San Jose to Santa Rosa this evening and have to leave here around 5. Google maps is tell me to go up the 880 to the 580 and go over the San Rafael Bridge. I would have assumed that it's shorter to go up 101 and over the Golden Gate though, however I don't know traffic in the area. Can anyone help me out? How's traffic gonna be up either route?

Google Maps directions suck. Use Mapquest or just get a map and plan the route yourself.

After 5? Expect heavy traffic no matter which way you go. I reccommend taking 280 which usually has the lightest traffic, relatively speaking. Things won't clear up till around 6:30 or so.

I think that you're going to hit traffic either way. If you take 280 N to 19th ave thru SF and then the GG bridge, it'll be slightly shorter.
Traffic at the 80/580/880 intersection blows if you take the other way to the San Rafael bridge.
BTW, I love the Sonoma coast.

I'd recommend going 280N -> 19th North -> GG Bridge. but either way sucks if you leave at 5. i'd plan it as a 1.5-2-hour trip

do not take 880 at 5pm.. as a matter of fact, try to avoid it completely if possible.. 101 is the shortest, distance wise, but it's definately goign to be packed at 5... 280 is a little lighter, and the traffic actually moves, btu the distance is a little longer.. personally at 5pm, i would take 280 to 19th to GG bridge
