3-12 IN. I was an 11M at the time. I had held 11B, 16B and 00R MOS'. Both 3-12 and 4-12 had just transitioned from 11B to Bradleys. I transitioned to 11M in 1988 while at Kirchgöns.
Baumholder was my last duty assignment in Germany. Prior to the time there, I'd been stationed in Gelnhausen, Burbach, Kirchgöns and Garlstedt; with a rotation back to the states in between.
Off-duty time around Baumholder was great if you got away from the Kaserne and the town. Went to Luxembourg a couple of times with friends. The French border wasn't far. After they opened up the European borders, it was the same as driving to another state. The German mentality regarding GIs seemingly changed for the better after the drawdown. I remember visiting Baumholder in 1984 and found the local attitudes totally different when I arrived there in 1992. The last two years there were good as I linked up with a gal from Wiesbaden.
Being out on those ranges and in the field in the middle of winter was nasty, wasn't it? Here is another bit of trivia for you. Did you know Jefferey Dahmer was stationed in Baumholder? He was a medic in one of the Armor battalions during the late 70s.
