All the proof anyone needs that the old BSG was better than the new BSG is that the new BSG was only really good when it was copying the old BSG. Once it got away from that (about the season 2 - season 3 cusp), then the show started to fall apart.

I don't care for the old space opera style of the cheesy 70s shows.

The new BSG was far from being about the sci-fi elements. Rather, it was more of a serious drama. The "emo" characters, as people like to complain, were natural imho. It was exploring how humanity struggles with the events it had to go through, and nobody is going to be a cheerful bastard in that kind of situation. It was a political and social drama first, sci-fi tv show second. The sci-fi was just a background vehicle to explore the human side of the situation. Thus why it focused so heavily on the characters and the very real issues they used a lot. I thoroughly enjoyed the insurgency issues with the New Caprica subplot.

Ok I've only seen a few episodes of each but here's my rendition:

Good Sci-Fi (Star Trek TNG,DS9,Some episodes of Stargate SG1)>>BSG New = Space Soap opera >>>>BSG Old = Campy 70s Sci-Fi

And actual good TV (House etc..) is better than all of these [though I'm not making a direct comparison].

My unprofessional opinion of the new BSG is that it could have been amazing given an unlimited budget. Trying to limit their budget caused them to make filler episodes that were all shot in like 3 rooms and unfortunately the filler, bullshit subplots started to take over the series.
