Battlestar Galactica moving to Sunday nights

SCI FI Channel will move its hit series Battlestar Galactica to Sunday nights, TV Guide is reporting and the Chicago Tribune has confirmed. Starting January 21, the network will resume Season Three of the show at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on Sunday nights.

The show has struggled in the ratings since the new season premiered in October. SCI FI bumped the series from a summer premiere -- alongside former Friday night companions Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis -- to a fall premiere.

All three original series have seen lower ratings this year, with SG-1 quickly cancelled after its record-setting tenth season.

Battlestar Galactica's new timeslot competition will include ABC's Brothers and Sisters and CBS's Without a Trace.

New episodes of Galactica currently air every Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern/Pacific.


I know all of us fans are hoping the ratings go up. It would be a real shame if this was the last season.
Paying people like Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell plus the cost of the special effects makes BSG a very expensive show. In fact that is why the original Battlestar was cancelled. Between Lorne Green and the effects it cost twice as much as other shows. Hence the constantly repeating space shots.
If Sunday doesn't improve the ratings I am going to downgrade my guestimate of another season from 90-10 for another season to 55-45 for.

I have no problem with BSG at all. I don't see why they have to move it. Friday night TV already sucks, I love SCI-FI Friday.

It really took a nose dive the last few episodes of Season 2 and hasn't really recovered in Season 3.

I'm just now getting into this show (halfway through Season 1) I hope they don't cancel it.

I'm sure Sci-Fi is taking this into account, but I can't help but wonder how much of an impact delayed-viewing via DVRs has on the ratings of a show like this. The fanbase for a show like this is obviously going to be much more tech-savvy and have Tivos/DVRs. I don't know about you guys, but I rarely watch any shows (outside of sporting events) in real-time anymore.

The DVR factor should be accounted for...especially since this is a Friday night show. However, most broadcasters think of DVRs as a negative because people fast-forward through all the commercials. They can't go to advertisers and say, "Hey, look at all the people that recorded BSG on their DVRs" because the advertisers will shoot back "They are fast-forwarding through what we are paying you to show!"

Video podcasts don't make much of a dent. A recent Nielsen study showed that a smaller than estimated percentage of video iPod owners even made use of the video capabilities of their video iPods.

the stupidest thing they ever did was breakup scifi friday... and not bsg is struggling because of it. I do worry about atlantis some as well.

Sg1 has been on the air forever... it was getting time for it to go off the air anyways.

I said it before in another BSG thread, but they really lost me during season 2. The first few episodes of season 3 weren't bad but they've gone straight back to "not exactly gripping, super interesting or making much sense in places" land again. I don't really care about any of the characters anymore and the skin jobs being motivated by/fretting over some god is a total loss.

Season 1 was really good, can we have some more of that please...

Stargate SG-1 movies coming to DVD

What's the future of Stargate SG-1? Fans have been wondering and rumors have been flying for weeks since the long-running SCI FI Channel series was cancelled in August (story). Now, at least the first part of that answer is here.

MGM has given a green light for the show's creators to produce two direct-to-DVD movies based on SG-1. Executive producer Brad Wright let TV Guide in on the news this week.

"It's the climax of the Ori story line," Wright said of the first film. The movie will tie up the loose ends from the show's tenth season, which is expected to conclude its U.S. television run in June. The film will be written and directed by current SG-1 executive producer and show-runner Robert C. Cooper.

The SG-1 cast is not signed for the movies yet, but are said to be "very eager" to continue.

Wright will pen the second film, which will involve time travel.

The producers have previously expressed a desire to set up a third Stargate television series with a film -- but it isn't confirmed yet whether or not this second movie will do just that.

The studio is targetting a fall 2007 release for both projects -- just a few months after Stargate SG-1 ends its historic, 10-year run on cable television.

It's entirely possible that the movies will also be aired on television -- something SCI FI commonly does with direct-to-DVD movies.

"They're not big-budget [films] by any definition, but for us it's pretty good," Wright told TV Guide. "As we've proven over the years, just give us little more money and we can make pretty good television, or DVDs."

"There's a sense of an era for us ending," he said, "but at the same time, we're all positive because of the prospect of continuing forward with movies and the introduction next year of Stargate Worlds, a massive multiplayer online game."

Season Ten of Stargate SG-1 resumes with all-new episodes in March on SCI FI Channel.

Friday's are a hard sell for any network because that is generally the night that most viewers are not at home. There's only been a few shows that have genuinely been a hit on Friday night.

More people are at home on Sunday.
