It's not considered an overclock because it's the stock functionality. If you ask Intel if you are considered to be overclocking your CPU when it runs at 3.8Ghz Turbo and thus void your warranty they would say a resounding no.

Basically how I feel. If the chip is following its built-in voltage and frequency tables, it's not overclocked.

LOL @ having to use an OC'd card against a stock 680 and still losing.

Sad.

So hold on HD7970 GE is "overclocked" but Kepler doesn't overclock itself? That's grasping for straws right there. AMD could have called HD7970 GE = HD7980.

Instead they went for a suffix, no different than:

6800 Ultra (400mhz GPU) vs. 6800 Ultra Extreme (450 mhz GPU)
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=179&card2=302

X850 XT (520 mhz GPU) vs. X850 XT Platinum Edition (540mhz GPU)
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=55&card2=56

You realize using your definition the entire GeForce 4 Ti line is then "overclocked"?

They all have identical chip NV25, only GPU and memory clocks separate them:

GeForce 4 Ti 4200 = 250 GPU / 444 memory
GeForce 4 Ti 4400 = 275 GPU / 550 memory
GeForce 4 Ti 4600 = 300 GPU / 650 memory

Pretty funny how until this day BF3 is used as the most important game as if no gamer plays anything other than BF3; and even then NV leads by 5-10%.

Seeing the Op with those charts for armored kill,now the statements like a 7950 for 1680x1050 is overkill can be squashed completely,as you need at least a overclocked 7950 to deliver 60 fps average,and with 4x msaa,its even worst with 51fps average for a 7970.

I have a freaking overclocked 7850 and the numbers for that card at 1680x1050 look god awful,wow.

To be fair, that's if you want to max it out. You can sacrifice a little detail for a lot of framerate.

Keep in mind MSAA takes a huge performance hit on modern GPUs with deferred MSAA game engines (BF3).

1680x1050 no AA
680 = 80 fps
7970 GE = 76 fps

1680x1050 4xMSAA
680 = 63 fps (-21% or a loss of 17 fps)
7970 GE = 59 fps (-22% or a loss of 17 fps)

So if you want MSAA in BF3, then none of the modern GPUs is overkill. :D

Some people just accept the blurring of FXAA and use an HD7850 OC / 7870. That extra 4x MSAA requires spending $100-200+ extra.
