Punkbuster approved, lol.

And, everyone, here's how it is. Guns are inaccurate if you hold the trigger, if you can't figure that out, don't play. Sniper rifles kill with headshot only, it's a balancing feature, and, I hate snipers, so it's good. Air is easily raped by any decent stinger team, so learn to play. Classes you should play are medic and AT, the others are very, VERY situational. Never use starting medic gun, use the L96 and you'll do alot better, just remember do NOT HOLD THE FIRE BUTTON DOWN.

If Air-force is that bad for you, play infantry only servers.

If you think public servers are full of total morons and idiots just spamming nades, try the Battlefield 2 Combat Tour of duty -

BF2 Combat

(It's even linked from the EA bf2 website)

I swear, being in this team-based tournament makes the game AMAZING. People actually no what they're doing and will help you get better.

I dont know about you guys but the first time I played I did really good. I dont play a lot no more because I am too lazy to hook my dvd drive up for the CD.......

When I do play, I usually rank in the top 3 players even though I am something like a Master Seargent.....

What's a stinger team? Expansion pack? In the game I play there are fixed-mount AA missiles, which the designers usually locate in a corner between two high structures, and anti-vehicle rockets (LAWs) which are not completely useless, but I don't think they make the average pilot tremble.

This is the only game I play daily. I put about 700+ hours in to the game since 2006 and I'm about to be captain.

There's a steep learning curve about using your weapons, knowing the maps and physics. Then you need to learn how to use vehicles especially the heli and jet. You need good 200-300 hours on the ground before you can even compete as a ground and pound soldier. Some guns are more accurate than others and some are more powerful than others but less accurate. You don't want to unload a clip from 50 meters away. That's stupid. You aren't going to hit anything because of the automatic recoil. In the beginning I died more so than I lived but now I'm usually top 3 and never go below top 5.

If you are new to the game you should go to a newb server because you will get beat badly if you played with somebody who has 1000 hours in the game who knows a lot of tricks. It doesn't seem fun to you because you are getting killed isn't that right?

Ya, I think the game has been out so long that most players are vets, and the game play so wide and free, meaning new players have a steep learning curve. I've been playing so long I can get anyone on any server if I try.
I would like to play on the BF Combat servers, but I'm not into monthly fee stuff and I'm sure the service sucks here in Japan. I almost exclusively play squad leader on full 64 player maps, all features enabled if possible (such as vehicles and FF). Since it's a public server, you have to relax. I issue commands and have general attack plans, etc., but let people do whatever they want in my squad. So it's a lot of fun.
I'm really happy with the game.
I was dissapointed to hear that Bad Company will only be available on consoles though. Nice graphics and fully destructible environs!
Any news of a BF3 for PC?

Just the initial rumor that was supposedly a leaked memo around last oct. Hopefully we'll hear more now that bad company is out. Google battlefield 3 to get some of the info.

SRAWing air targets is FTW, but very hard. I was talking about the AIX handheld stingers, which is a player-mod.

yep, some people love it, many people hate it. Reading through these forums, there is more hate than love. And in most cases it comes from people who play it for a few days and give up or even worse, play it solo for a few hours and expect to be gods and as soon as any player kills them and they think is "lame" or "unfair" it turns to a hate relationship.

I'll be honest, I'm a fanboi of BF2, but my love is more specific. I exclusively play BF2: SF and on infantry only servers. Occasionally I play some regular BF2 and I can see how people hate vehicles and air dominance in some servers. But what people don't understand is not all servers are created equal. There is a wide selection of servers and the bigger the server the more you'll probably hate the game because there are too many people hogging up all the vehicles which in turn means more ways of you dying through tanks, airplanes etc.

Look at mid or small servers, 32 is my max. 64 is a bit overkill. Also, play SF.

Also, its about skill too so maybe if you don't suck in shooters you'll enjoy it, cheers

Well actually I'm not horrible at shooters and I'm also not one to play a game for 2 minutes and throw it in the can. I've been playing it since I made this thread and while I have grown to like it a bit, the fact remains that a lot of the issues I had with the game in my OP still piss the hell out of me.

No need to be condescending / blindly defend a game some people may think is not their ideal game :)

As a former die-hard BF1942 and DoD:S player, I didn't like BF2 at first, but i continued to play it now and then and it slowly grew on me to the point of near-addiction.

I now have nearly 1500 hrs. and was promoted to 3-star General a couple of weeks ago.

Yes there are plenty of things wrong with the game, but IMHO the positives far outweigh the negatives.

D.I.C.E. is currently working on an "update" and new maps for the game while continuing development of BF3.

Some of the things that D.I.C.E should include in the update, again IMHO:

Only allow 1 Claymore per sniper per spawn, no resupply.

Only allow 3 'nades per soldier per spawn, again no resupply. The clay and nade spamming can get ridiculous at times.

Make the F-18, F-35 and J-10 equally capable. As it is now the J-10 rules the sky unless you have an outstanding pilot on your team to counter it.

Degrade the G36E a bit. Yes it is an unlock and therefore should be a better gun, but considering in real life it's the same caliber and barrel length as the M16A2 it's ridiculously over-powered and over-accurate.

J-10 can GO DIE IN A BURNING HELL HOLE!

2 equally skilled pilots, F18 vs J-10, J-10 WILL ALWAYS WIN.

Wait wait wait, why is J-10 overpowered?

I've never been fond of air combat so I never get on a jet.

I really liked it back when I use to play a lot. Sometimes the hit boxes were annoying but never bothered me that much.

Back in it's glory, the group I belong to ran 4 different servers (vanilla, SF, EF and AF) and they were always filled. Loved the squad play and getting to know so many regs. Good times.

It's really not about jets in BF2 although it's the most powerful vehicle in the game. It's about the players and squads doing the ground and pounding and capturing flags. If you have bunch of generals in one team vs privates and low ranks on another I wonder who's going to win? I'm willing to bet that 99% of the time it's going to be the team with higher ranks.

They can own you with the jets all they want but if you take their base with the jets they won't be able to fly. :p

All you need is 3 squads with good ground and pound with plenty of medics and anti tank you are going to pwn.

Agreed. Jet pilots can rape ground troops all game and they won't win it for their side. Problem with jets in my view, aside from the silly stuff like being able to swoop low over the field to rearm/refuel, is that there is no incentive for them to fight each other. They get more points pounding dogfaces into the mud over and over, as opposed to chasing some other jet for two minutes to get 1 or 2 kills. More often than not their pilots are killing our ground troops, and our pilots are killing their ground troops.

Problem with jets is that they can't see ground soldiers. Pilots have to guess where they are going drop the bombs. If you stay away from the most bomb areas and main strips you will be pretty much safe from air attacks. This is where the experience comes again. Lot of newbs make this mistake or start getting on their jeeps in main roads where jets like to drop bombs.

I used to play Battlefield 2 for hours on end when it first came out. Flying Jets was my favorite thing to do until I started noticing there was no point in even dog fighting the J10; you may as well roll over and die if the other pilot even remotely has skill.

I switched to choppers but this aerial unbalance meant that J10s had free reign to destroy choppers at will. It was still fun as all hell to circle around in the blackhawk while my teammates tore up enemy troops with the minigun, dropped them off to capture a point, then load back in and fly to the next point with lightning speed. :D

The balance in this game is borked.

I heard you can climb higher with some other jets without losing control over J-10. Is this true?

Yes, you actually gain speed quite rapidly by doing this with an X35B. However, in most cases the J10 will shoot you down with its gun before you can escape.

Do you have any links on this, I'd love to read up on it, or is it just speculation? I'm referring more on the update not BF3
