Battlefield 2 Patch totaled my installation

Soooo I'm installing the 1.22 - 1.3 patch, all is going well, BF2 patched fine. It starts to patch Special Forces, then for no reason at all it just goes PATCHING FAILED, and throws me back to the desktop.
The InstallSheild thing says patched successfully, but SF won't run, and BF2 now thinks its at 1.3 so the 1.22 - 1.3 patch won't work, because "BF2 must be version 1.22". Downloading the full patch isn't much of an option, and I won't have access to the installation CDs to install/uninstall BF2 for a month :( Is there anyway to force the 1.3 patcher to work, any registry entries I could edit to force the patcher to think I have 1.22?

Not an option on this connection, and just how am I supposed to get my CD key from halfway across the globe?

I tried, there's nothing useful in there, modifying the version number there didn't do anything either.

I don't think you can pull the key from the registry. I've tried that before when I was home over Christmas break and forgot my CDs at school.

A friend of mine had the same problem. Ended up having to nuke the entire install and then patch with the full 1.3 before things started working again. It was a mess for him. Of course it could have partly been b/c of user error too. YMMV.

Your OS is fine, so it didn't "total your installation." You can't play a game...it's not the end of the world.

i hate that game now, you can't instant spawn on a squad leader and it kills the boat raids :(

It totalled my BF2 installation, did it not?
Installing the full patch did nothing, now I just get crashed to the desktop faster than I can say "Connect to Server". Where the hell am I going to find BF2 CDs over here?

Muahaha, found out what was wrong. Turns out that when the original patch failed, it wiped out the "ergc" key under Battlefield 2 in the registry, which is the CD key. Don't have the CD keys or the CDs on me, but a quick System Restore to last week got the CD key back. Installed the full 1.3 patch, and now it works. Yay.

BF2 is one of the most unstable games I've ever played. It's a shame how it's been marred by such shoddy development and/or overly aggressive timelines.

I for one LOVE the gameplay, but I got sick of subjecting myself to all of the issues a long time ago. If 2142 even SMELLS like BF2, I'm running the other way.

Good, now to get someone inside my house :p
It is working now though, no need to hire a locksmith, have him break in, read the code to me over the phone, and lock up anymore.

Until I updated to my new system I woulda believed and agreed with you..
but on my A64 3800 X2 and Corsair XMS 7900GT the game is soo stable now I have had no issues at ALL....
Im beginning to think its just very hardware sensitive...
