battlefield 1942 question

In this game, can you play off-line, or is this an on-line game only? I don't really like to play over the net because there are to many idiots out there that are only playing to piss other people off. The game sound like it would be great to play though.
 
except bots are dumb. and dumberer. online is not that bad if you stick to smallish <20 servers. lots of players means lots o smacktards.
 
I actually enjoy playing against the bots offline. In fact, I have had the game for like 4 monthes and have yet to play online. Part of this is due to the fact that I like to play only one game at a time online and currently I am playing Americas Army but the bots are still fun to play against. Just my $.02

IMO, the offline play is invaluable if you take this game seriously. It's a greatway to learn the maps and practice driving vehicles since their dynamics do not change regardless what mode you're in.
 
I have played the singleplayergame once. I was amazed how stupid the bots were...Anyway to answer your question, yes you can 😉
 
BF1942 has some of the best bots I've seen in a game. If you turn the difficulty and CPU time given to AI up, they're not as "dumb" as some people have stated.
As far as online play, your best bet is to find a clan server that has moderators there almost 24/7. In all the online games I play I play on a select few servers that I like... that's how I prefer to do it... you get familiar with some people, have some fun playin with your gaming buddies.
 
The bots make good practice but nothing beats a human opponent. It makes for some unforgetable moments.

I was a British commando sniper in BF1942 SWoWW2's Telemark map in a sniper position quite aways from the German factory.

I saw a German sniper running towards my position. I try to pick him off, no go. I lob all my grenades, no go. Then the guy disappears, so I know he's not that fast. I scan around with my binocs and scope, don't see him anywhere.

Next thing I know, he's right next to me lying prone looking for enemies. I whip out my Colt and took him out. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT.

nice story! I enjoy sniping too, but get frustrated when a definite headshot (crosshair right at the head) doesn't kill the guy. Even 2-3 shots doesnt do it.

That's probably because you're hitting the guy in the helmet, rather than the face. If you hit him in the face, they drop like a rock.

Would I need to account for gravity in aiming for the head?
 
helmet or face doesn't matter.
headshot is headshot = 1 shot kill.

No, you don't need to account for gravity, but if the target is moving, you do need to account for bullet travel time based on how far away the target is.

The crosshairs move around slightly while aiming, so you may not have been right on the head when you fired. And I'm not sure, but there may be some random deviation that means the bullet doesn't always go exactly where the crosshairs are.

To answer the original question,
Yes, you can play offline. But 90% of the people will tell you that online is what BF is all about.
The unexpected behavior of human teammates and opponents is what keeps this game entertaining.
Yes, there are some servers where you will find plenty of idiots who think it is great fun to run around trying to kill their teammates and destroy their own vehicles.
But you will also find some servers with good admins who immediately kick any of these idiots who try to join their server.
Once you have found a couple of good servers with regulars, you will have a great time playing a game filled with teamwork and strategy.

There are both SP and MP demos available for download.
They are fully functional demos each with one map.
The SP demo has one of my least favorite maps and I found it to be relatively boring.
The MP demo has one of the best maps (Wake Island).
I played the MP demo for about a month straight without ever getting bored of it.
So dl them both and give it a try.
