Battlefield 1942 Opinions Wanted...

Okay so I've played MOH: AA & The Spearhead expansion pack and wanted to pick up a game of the same genre and I keep hearing that BF 1942 is a great game. Considering they are both EA games, what sets them apart? Thanks in advance 🙂

MOH is infantry focused. BF 1942 has infantry, artillery, planes etc. and is great fun online. The maps are pretty big and take some teamwork to hold down the flags. Desert Combat - a free mod out for BF1942 - has pretty much occupied all my time, I dont even play the regular 1942 anymore.

Its well worth the purchase.

I love MOH:AA but i don't like 1942. It is a multiplayer game, not a single mission game. It HAS single missions, but they are nothing like MOH in that they are an open environment and how much you participate is up to you. Whereas in MOH you are a single person with missions, in 1942 you work more on a team and don't have a defined role (other than scout, medic, etc).

1942 is just too wide open for my liking...it doesn't give much direction as far as missions go.

If you like multiplayer though...1942 is pretty good.

1942 is definitely more fun than MOH IMO. You can just do so much more in 1942... use a jeep, then crash it and pick up a tank... then hop into a plane and bomb. Just overall so much more fun.

Well, I can't tell you about MOH: AA, but all I can say is BF 1942 is a fantastic game. The reason I like BF 1942 so much personally is the ability to do what you please. In many other war games, you're isolated to one job mainly, ground fighting. In Battlefield 1942 you can man submarines, man aircraft carriers, fly aircraft, drive tanks, vehicles, be a ground infantry, be a medic. The possibilites in the game are so endless, and it's not as easy to kill people as in other games. In most other games you start firing and the gun barely recoils, it's ridiculous. In BF 1942 it takes much more skill to be a good player than...counterstrike per say.

Battlefield 1942 also boasts a very nice modification: Desert Combat. They've presented even more new utilities - ie helicopters etc. Also, you can setup mortars midfield as an engineer, or even put up sandbags to guard you and your fellow troops.

Now, there is also the downside to this game. I've found that sometimes you really wanna play it, and you love playing it...but then other times you'd rather watch reruns of Oprah Winfrey rather than playing it. Also, the expansion packs which are released by the company that makes the game often lack much substance, and some companies would give it for free but they charge $15 or so per expansion.

If you'd like to read some online reviews regarding the game, you can look at some of the following links.

While BF1942 is an excellent game, realize it is very different from Medal of Honor. While MoH is more deathmatch oriented, BF1942 is all about the team. The combat tends to occur at further distances and involves many aspects not present in MoH. In my opinion, BF1942 is at its best when you can get together with friends and play it. It clearly is supposed to be played as a team, and this can be lacking in typical online games. If you can play with other people you know its great.

I too play more Desert Combat than BF1942 these days, simply because .3A version came out a few weeks ago. While DC has some fun toys, it certainly lacks balance. When I can't stand the constant TKing, plane/copter camping, and ownage from unbalanced aircraft, I switch back to BF1942. The original programmers knew at least a little about maintaining balance.

Edit: Like most games, BF1942 suffers from a lack of cooperation. Too many people acting in their own self interest (to TK in order to plane whore). There is little team work towards and objective.

Yup. And get the Desert Combat mod so you can also fly Apaches 😀

apaches, a10's harriers whatever🙂 u can even ride or fly/gun a large plane. or parachute out a cargo plane, or just parachute out of any plane really. thats one unrealistic area, u can open your parachute 5 feet from the ground and survive haha🙂

Looks like w/o the multi-player option, BF1942 isn't that great of a game 🙁 I've read that the online play is great, but w/o a solid single-player campaign, I'm 😕 on whether I sould purchase it or not.

If you aren't going to play multiplayer, don't bother buying BF1942. Plainly put, the single player game isn't any fun.

DC and B1942 is great for multiplayer. It's fun being a medic, engineer, sniper or whatever. What I love is using the blackhawk and manning the gun turret over flyby's.

i got it a few days ago. it is a very "plain" title. no frills, really.

the video is not great, the audio is not great, the interface is not great, the idea is not great, but surprisingly, the game is fun. like i read in a review somewhere, it doesnt do anything great, but they brought new things together to make it fun. each game is different because you can do whatever the hell you want.

this game is mainly for online play, the "singleplayer" is just playing the online maps with bots with very little background.

i think for me, its just fun because i can drive tanks and aircraft around. i still cant fly helicopters, but its nice to sit in a gunner's seat and shoot while someone else is driving.

and btw, playing on a modem SUCKS. a 15-player game is far from the real experience of a 64 player game.

A word of warning, if you DO get BF1942, be prepared to find MOH:AA more childish, cartoony, and arcadish! 🙂

I used to play MOH:AA a LOT, then when I got BF1942, I now can't stand MOH:AA!!! It's not that it's not a great game, it is, but I prefer the team play, range of stuff you can do, and open-ness of BF1942. It is SO much fun playing on a 64 player server, with bombs from planes, artillery fire, snipers, engineers with mines and dynamite, tanks, jeeps etc, it's just so much fun, and you're not limited to just doing a couple of things.

One fun thing I did at my LAN party last weekend, was to get an APC, fill it up with 3 other friends, drove it round the side of the map, into the back of the enemy base, drop them off, so they picked up a couple of the enemy tanks, then attack them from the back, and steal back 2 of the spawn points, and in the end, turn it round from our team losing, to our team winning!

If you have a fast net connection, then playing BF1942 online is something you can't beat.

Single player, it's not as good, but it does give you some OK training for playing online.

Confused

Playing BF1942 online with 64K ISDN or slower is not really worth it. In fact it sux. MoH plays significantly better online when you have a slow connection speed... 😉

BF1942 is one of the best games ever made. but it is also one of the most buggy games evermade. even with the latest patches applied. The other day i saw a stick of dynamyte walking across the ground and a aircraft carrier float accross the sky. i have also fell thru walls to my death.

The only patch I've done for mine is 1.25 (just so I could run RTR). I've never seen anything like that with the original version or the patch. In fact I've never noticed any bugs. Granted, I don't look hard for them but I'd notice anything close to that.

battlefield 1942 is yaytastic

at only $40, it's a steal. IMO don't bother with RtR, but SW looks promising when it comes out (Nov i think?)

a lot of people play DC, which is esentially a whole free expansion (and rumored to become one eventually)

personally, i like classic BF over DC, but hey, whatever floats your boat 🙂

My son and I both loved the MOH games.
Many people are much enamored with BF1942 and to each his own. I never cared for 1942 myself.
You wont know till you try it yourself.
Why not download the demo before you buy?

Closest thing I know to MOH gameplay was Return to Castle Wolfenstein, except for the silly ghost part of it.
You can probably get that game secondhand for cheap now.

I have been playing mohaa and spearhead since they came out and love them both. I bought BF'42 because of all the hoopla surrounding it and after about 5 hours of playing it it now sits on my shelve collecting dust. I just couldn't get into it and dieing after taking 2-3bullets didn't add to the fun any. Anyway since you don't seem to be looking for a game that is mulitplayer which BF'42 really is why not look into RTCW or maybe even Hitman2 or Splintercell? Just a thought 🙂

same here it's on the shelf but I will play it when the 1.4 patch comes out. RTCW is my game right now. Den of Lions rulez : )

I still prefer C&C Renegade after playing BF1942.

Its simpler but I find it more interesting. If you get stuck with a lousy team in Renegade, the game will all be over in a matter of a few minutes but BF1942 can last a bit longer and make it rather boring.

Renegade was also fun because I managed to get top 30 in the UK one month which I was proud of.
