Is it me or does it seem like very little amount of people play the game?

Is it me or are there very little fun maps?

Is it me or are the graphics purposely grainy and crappy?

Why is this game fun?

And the weapons don't feel that great when you shoot...

Ummm very few play because its as old as the hills now... BF: Vietnam has been released moths ago (the sequel) and numerous mods that have been made since.

Is it me or are there very little fun maps?
There are a ton of maps - but the they are small by newer games standards (see below)

Is it me or are the graphics purposely grainy and crappy?

Its a differnet kind of engine and they are not 'Farcry' crisp but hope is out there (see below)

Why is this game fun?

In a full server of chaos you would have some fun :) At the time it was the 1st large scale game (that took off) using vehicles and the likes (even though Tribes 2, Planetside and others did a far better job years before)

And the weapons don't feel that great when you shoot...

I agree - It's pretty cartoony - not realistic at all

But never fear - BUY JOINT OPERATIONS (and its expansion) - Realism, Bigger and more varied maps, 150 player servers, more vehicles than you can shake a stick at, maps as big as 64km squared, farcry quality graphics (you can even see the petrol fumes distorting your view looking out of ya helicopter) and an eternity of fun :)

Truly JO was/is a total BF killer. I think it might even hold up quite well against the soon to come BF2. Can't wait for BF2 either :)

Yeah, it's just you and no, it doesn't suck at all.
Battlefield 1942 is by far my favorite game of all time. I played it at least 10 hours a week for the first 1.5 years after it was released. I keep looking, but I still haven't found any other game that is as fun as BF 1942.

There are still plenty of people who play, but not as many as there were in the first 2 years.

The maps are much larger and more varied than the vast majority of FPS's that came before this game.

The graphics are nothing mind-blowing, but it's a 2.5 year old game and the devs were more concerned with gameplay than having amazing graphics.

It is fun because there is such a large variety of vehicles and so many different ways to play that it never gets boring. It is fun because when you get in a good server with good people, the teamwork aspect really comes out.

The feel of the weapons is much more realistic and less arcadish than many of the FPS's that preceded this game. Games like Medal of Honor and Quake, where every shot hits the target instantaneously.

Not concerned with graphics, it's just that they are a bit annoying to look at with hords of texture aliasing.

Vietnam isn't a sequel because it's a different time setting. It is a sequel, but it's different because of the time setting.

I play a lot of Wake, that is my favorite map, all the other maps that I've played aren't any good, but Wake, I've spent hours on it. I know it's a run-on.

Analogy time.

A big bandwagon and parade has just marched through town. There were floats and tickertape and music and trick performers and clowns and everyone was there and having a blast.

Now a week later you're standing in the middle of the empty street with dirty tickertape on the ground and some half inflated balloons in the gutters going, "This party sucks. What is everyone so excited about?"

We've all had a blast then moved on to Halflife, Doom, FarCry etc. Be sure you don't miss the Battlefield 2 parade when it comes to town.

Yeah seems like fewer and fewer people are playing the game in its original unmodded form but you can still find some full servers.

Is it me or are there very little fun maps?
It is you. Maybe you are spending too much time on one or 2 maps so you don't really know the other maps and therefore don't do as well on them. There are plenty of fun maps.

Is it me or are the graphics purposely grainy and crappy?
By todays standards yes they are. Although I've seen worse. Even when the game was new they weren't amazing but plenty acceptable to me. Have to take into account the sprawling size of the maps for the time. Some accomodations had to be made.

Why is this game fun?
It just IS. It was ground breaking when it came out. I still enjoy it today. I can still load it up and play for hours. I didn't even buy it until it had been out for a year and when I finally did I was so so sorry I hadn't rushed out and got it when it was released. It has so many aspects of play with all the different roles and vehicles you can get in. It never gets boring to me. Although, granted, it does need a decent amount of people playing to enjoy it in all its glory. So I can see where you are coming from being that full servers are getting harder to find as the game ages. And Battlefield Vietnam is even more fun to me. I can only imagine what BF2 will be like. Looks awesome. So newer stuff is getting better and BF 1942 is getting a little dated. But I still enjoy it.

And the weapons don't feel that great when you shoot...

I guess it's kinda like if you never saw the original Episodes IV, V, and VI of Star Wars and you watched episodes I, II, and III first, then went back and watched IV, V, VI. You'd be like. . .man those original movies look crappy compared to the new ones. You just had to be there. . .

Its a good game. But I've got my complaints with it. Some of the interface is to clunky. The netcode is a mixed bag. (I really shouldn't have to aim ahead with a tommy gun when the guy is only 20ft away, and all those boat deaths and wacky ladder teleports turned me off ships completely).

But there's just tons of stuff to do. You can snipe, you can fly a plane, you can drive a tank. You can fix stuff, set traps, heal teammates, etc. Its definately fun, but far from my favorite game ever or anything.

Good analogy. A singleplayer game can be enjoyed years after its release, but with many - perhaps most - multiplayer games (unless LAN) you have to take the chance when it comes.

That's why I'm eager to begin playing World of Warcraft as soon as possible. But I want to wait for the right moment (i.e. when I move to my own place) so I can fully appreciate it with relatively undisturbed playing, voice communication and all. I kind of fear that I won't get there in time, and if I don't I know the chance will be lost forever.

Though I guess WoW will be here for years, it's more or less just begun. However I still like that initial "New World" feeling that can only be had when a multiplayer game is fresh and everyone is together exploring, equally awed by it all.

As much as I enjoyed DC (and I played a lot of it), I still think 1942 has better overall balance and gameplay.

And I tried to move on to Doom and HL2, but I found them to be very boring compared to 1942.

It was kinda fun. But I started getting bored because there were so many people running around disorganized. What a mess to get working smoothly.

answered. The game is old

Is it me or are there very little fun maps?
Wake and IoTP were my favorites, but I liked most of the pacific maps, the eastern Europe maps weren't as fun to me, North Africa maps were in-between.

Is it me or are the graphics purposely grainy and crappy?
What do you expect? It runs great on a P3 1GHz with a Geforce4 MX card. Remember, it's like 3+ years old or so.

Why is this game fun?
Because the gameplay style is great. Better than it's successor BF:V in my opinion.

And the weapons don't feel that great when you shoot...

I won't buy a FPS unless I know I'm gonna play the hell outta it online. Yet I dont think I stuck very long with BF1942. I came back for some DC a few times but it never grabbed my attetion (like Quake/UT/HL/mods for all those) Yeah I like Joint Ops more, and hopefully BF2 will be the bomb, but just gotta wait and see...

In the time you have spent posting here - you could have ordered Joint Ops + Exp (On offer for around £20 the pair here in UK now) and be playing already!!!

It is the game you are looking for :)

How do these games compare with America's Army? I've only played AA, none of the others.

bf42 is possibly the greatest game ever created. it's been out for how long now? and people are still playing it (and NEW people are still finding the game). i myself still play desert combat (bf42 mod) nightly. now, battlefield vietnam was crap. that i will agree with.

AA is like a 5 year old basic shooter.

There is stuff out all ready like BF1942/Vietnam/2 Joint Ops and so on that make AA look like pong.

Seriously Move On and you will be delighted :)
