Ok, dilemma.

I purchased Battlefield 1942 for $26.00 total from GoGamer.com... :) Great deal.

WEll, i have a top of the line system and it won't run. *sigh* Makes me wonder why they released such a buggy version of B-Field without making it run smoothly across all Pc platforms. Guess they were pressered to start making some $$$?

Anyways, this is my problem. Once i enter the game, it crashes. After it loads, it just crashes my whole system and freezes... I have a good system too... All drivers updated, and in beloved patriot-span shape. I even changed the sound setting to 11hz and video modes to LOW to see if it would work, still nothing...

Has this happened to you guys?

I don't know if they've fixed this yet... but apparently, the game won't run if you're not using a 60Hz refresh rate.. try that

60hz refresh rate? Monitor you mean? If not, you mean the game option itself i take it? Yes, i'll assume it is the game itself.

Like you said, this game is buggy. One other complaint people have had is that it is *very* picky about programs you have running in the background. Try disabling/closing all the programs you can and see if it helps.

if you're getting a black screen, then the crash try this:

1) Apply the latest 1.1 retail patch
2) Go to the settings folder (under the main BF 1942 directory) and open the file "VideoDefault.con" (with notepad), and change "0" to a "1" next to the line "renderer.allowAllRefreshRates", and save.

Also, before trying to load the game, reboot first. You don't really need to, but there are many reports of laggy game play if you enter the game after installing, without rebooting first. I know it sounds strange, but there is a big thread about this over at the BF1942 forum.

For what its worth I have to disable Tiny Personal Firewall to play multiplayer. The instant I click on internet multiplayer it lock my system hard, no alt-tab, ctrl-esc, or ctrl-alt-del. Even with a rule in TPF for BF1942 set to allow traffic both ways it does this.

I have had a lot of issues with the refresh and update buttons of Multiplayer with Zone Alarm 3.1 ..... The Hard drive seems to be churning away but I get lock up ....... SOmetimes I will get an alert of BF1942 trying to access the net, sometimes it won't .... Wonderful concept and gameplay, but I hope patch 1.2 are on the way soon ....

Yeah, hope the next patch comes out soon..

Unfortunatley, this current 1.1 version patch doesn't seem to do a lot when it comes to making the game run smoother across a majority of PC systems.

This game is sooo damn buggy... I still can't believe EA released it so early... I consider this BF 1942 as a BETA version still.. Good grief, i mean.. How can it not work on a brand new system? (speaking of my system...)

Can't wait to get my grubby little hands on Need For speed Hot Pursuit 2 and Combat Flight Sim 3... =)

I've had the game for 2 weeks now...haven't played it once...because I can't get it to start...i get the black screen and then XP beep then back to desktop...and yes, I've tried everthing. What pisses me off is that my PC Gamer came yesterday and they gave this game a 92% and barely mentioned the problems that a lot of people are having...the only thing they mentioned was a sound bug that was easily fixed...
My system is pretty high end too....and I still can't get it to play...last resort is to reformat and reinstall XP..

My main system was down last week and I tried to install it on a backup Epox/Via/Athlon system and it would crash to the desktop. I thought it was because the OS was 2k Server. Never did get it to work.

Since then I got my main rig back up and running (MSI/AMD762/Athlon MP) and it's rock solid. I did have to load the patch and download SBLive drivers from creative to fix the sound, but despite those two annoyances, I love this game.

Considering they shipped the game late and released the 1.1 patch the day it arrived in stores, they probably should have just waited to released a fixed version.

hmmm....this game rocks as I grow to like it more and more since my friend got me into it few weeks ago. The thing that really bugs me is, I though I have a system that could handle most up-to-date games. But BF1942 runs sooooo slow on my system. I got the latest patches and playing single's game, and from time to time the game still lags/freezes for 5 seconds. What gives? Anyone has this issue and knows how to fix it?

It's called the "you need more memory bug." :) Seriously, you should have at least 512MB to play this game, 768-1GB would be even better. I'm using XP Pro and during game play, my memory usage is at about 533MB!!! And I only have AVG and ZoneAlram running in the back ground. :| Get another 256MB stick and you've freezes will go away. ;)

I'd also like to add that BF1942 plays great on my Athlon XP and P4 machines. :)

Keep in mind... DDR RAm only works in pairs of 2, not 3... If you put 3 sticks of DDR Ram, your comp won't reboot.. Hence the word, "DOUBLE"

hmmm....I just ordered another stick of DDR PC2700 Samsung 512MB. Are you telling me that I can't have them pair up?
Right now, I only have one stick of 256MB DDR PC2700.

No, you should be fine. I've got that RAM setup (256 + 512)in my game server.

I don't know if he's right, but he seems to be saying if you have two sticks of DDR ram, you can't add a third stick, course my K7S5A boards only have two slots for DDR ram anyway.

Are you sure your not thinking of Rambus memory? The word double in DDR refers to the data rate, not the requirement they be installed in pairs. Rambus does (currently) require pairs to be installed, but the new dual modules (really a electronic pair put onto a single slot configuration) will finally kill that issue.

WTF are you talking about?! That statement couldn't be MORE wrong. You can install DDR however you'd like (ie. single stick, 2 sticks, 3 sticks or more if your motherboard supports it).

The only thing I could think of that he's referring to, is the problem I've read about in some new KT333 motherboards. I have the Epox 8K5a2+, and the system can get squirly if you populate all 3 or 4 (Depending on model) DIMM Slots with non-registered memory.
But the pairs thing is for RDRam not DDR Dimm's.
