Battery problem?

I have a co-worker whose laptop battery might be toast. If I charge it up to 100% and then run on battery power for 5-10 minutes, then the charge drops down to 5%. When I plug the AC adapter back in, it charges back up to 100% in about 10 minutes, which seems a little too fast to me.

Is this a common sign that the battery is bad?

I wonder because I tried a different battery (but one that I wasn't sure was known-good), and saw the same problem.

Is is possible the something is wrong with the laptop itself?
