Battery issue? RAM issue?

Hey.

I recently added ram to an old Dell Inspiron 2600.

In order to install the ram I had to remove the battery.

After installing the ram, the laptop doesn't start/boot WITH THE BATTERY INSTALLED.

I thought it had something to do with the ram but I removed the new ram and reinstalled the original ram and the laptop still wouldn't power up.

IF I take out the battery and run only off of A/C power the laptop runs just fine.

Did I ruin the battery or did something else happen?

I know that the battery wasn't holding much of a charge but I would think that the laptop should still boot with a bad battery installed when I'm connected to an outlet, but it doesn't.

It only boots up when I take the battery out.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sometimes a bad battery will do that.

Looked up the 2600 specs, Mobile p3 or celeron! Time to recycle it. Not even worth $40 for a no name battery replacement...

Possibilities are battery, connector or, cable to the battery. Of course, being a Dell, your laptop is complaining because you didn't have a certified Dell technician install your ram. 🙂

I agree it is ancient. But I wiped it clean and only installed WIN XP and a couple of browsers and it flies for surfing!

I wouldn't need to update the BIOS for this would I?

You could try, but it probably won't do you any good. You indicate that the battery was failing, and it is possible for a bad battery to prevent a computer from booting.

IMHO replace the battery; or the whole thing.
